BR Rhythm Guide Arrangement Example

The following procedure describes how to create a simple Rhythm Guide Arrangement on the BOSS BR-864, BR-600 or BR-900CD. The example will be based on a 12-bar blues progression and will consist of the following steps:

      Length
Step Description Pattern (measures)
1 Lead-in P314:Metro 1
2 Intro P157:BLUS1-IN 1
3 Verse 1 P158:BLUS1-V1 11
4 Fill P159:BLUS1-F1 1
5 Verse 2 P158:BLUS1-V1 10
6 Ending P168:BLUS2-E 4
7 Break P327:BREAK

Procedure:

  1. Make sure the song is not playing (press the STOP button).

Then press the ARRANGE/PATTERN/OFF button repeatedly until the indicator is lit steady (not flashing). This selects Arrangement Mode.

The display should look something like this:

        P01:ROCK1
        [NAME] [COPY] [>

  2. The display shown above indicates that Preset arrangement #1 is selected. Preset arrangements can't be edited. So use the CURSOR keys to move the cursor to the letter 'P', then use the TIME/VALUE dial to change the 'P' to an 'S' (Song arrangement). The display should now look something like this:

        S01:EMPTY001
        [NAME] [COPY] [>

  3. Press the BR-864's PROGRAM button    (EDIT on the BR-900CD, RHYTHM EDIT on the BR-600).

    The display changes to:

        S01:EMPTY001
          [EDIT] [KIT]
        AR>S01:EMPTY001
        [STEP] [KIT] [N>
    BR-864 BR-600 & BR-900CD

  4. BR-864:   Move the cursor to [EDIT] and press ENTER.
BR-600 & BR-900CD:   Move the cursor to [STEP] and press ENTER.

This selects the Arrangement Edit screen which looks like this:

        01:001 P314 4/4
        ♩120.0 Metro   >

The display shown above indicates that Step 1 is currently selected ("01:"), it starts at measure #1 (":001"), using Preset pattern #314 which is the Metronome, the Time Signature is 4/4 and the Tempo is 120.0 bpm. We'll use this pattern to create a 4-count lead-in. That means it should play for one measure and step 2 should begin at measure 2.

  5. For step 2, we'll use preset pattern #157, which is an intro. Press the FF button (fast forward) once to select step 2. The display now looks like this:

        02:--- ---- -/-
        ♩---.- -------->

  6. Move the cursor to the Starting Measure field (":---") and use the TIME/VALUE dial to change it to ":002".

        02:002 P314 4/4
        ♩120.0 Metro   >

  7. Move the cursor to the pattern number ("314") and use the TIME/VALUE dial to change it to 157.

        02:002 P157 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-IN>

  8. We want the intro to last for one measure which means that step 3 should start at measure 3. Press the FF button once to advance to step 3.

        03:--- ---- -/-
        ♩---.- -------->

  9. Move the cursor back to the Starting Measure (":---") and change it to :003.

        03:003 P157 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-IN>

  10. Step 3 will be the first verse and we'll use pattern #158. Move the cursor to the pattern number ("157") and change it to 158.

        03:003 P158 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-V1>

  11. This is a 12-bar blues song, so we want the verse to last for 12 measures. This would mean that step 4 will start at measure 15 (3 + 12). However, we'll make the last bar of the verse a fill, so step 4 (the fill) will start at measure 14. Use FF to advance to step 4.

        04:--- ---- -/-
        ♩---.- -------->

  12. Move the cursor back to the Starting Measure (":---") and change it to :014.

        04:014 P158 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-V1>

  13. Change the pattern number to 159 (the fill).

        04:014 P159 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-F1>

  14. The fill lasts for one measure so the starting measure of step 5 will be 15. Select step 05: and set the starting measure to :015.

        05:015 P159 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-F1>

  15. Here we'll begin the second verse using pattern #158 again. Change the pattern number to 158.

        05:015 P158 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-V1>

  16. Verse 2 also lasts for 12 measures, so the starting measure of step 6 will be 27 (15 + 12). However, we want to use an ending pattern in the last two bars, so the starting measure of step 6 will be 25. Select step 06: and set the Starting Measure to :025.

        06:025 P158 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS1-V1>

  17. Now set the pattern to #168 which is the ending.

        06:025 P168 4/4
        ♩120.0 BLUS2-E >

  18. The last step of an arrangement will always repeat indefinitely. But we want the arrangement to stop after the ending pattern has played for 4 measures -- the length of this particular preset pattern (see chart on page 177 of the BR-864 manual). We can do this by setting the last step to pattern 327 which is a break (silence). So select step 07:, starting measure :029 (25 + 4), and set the pattern to 327.

        07:029 P327 4/4
        ♩120.0 BREAK   >

  19. We're done! Press the EXIT button twice to return to the Play screen.

    image

        001-1-00  ♩120.0
        00:00:00-00.0

  20. Press PLAY to hear the finished arrangement.
