I never listened to much Mötley Crüe. This song and video (especially the video) are much more subversive than I would have taken them for – almost a Rage Against the Machine vibe. A defiance against societal norms and expectations. Although there's an important difference: "Hooligan's Holiday" is about personal rebellion, whereas RATM is about rebellion as a means to inspire systemic change.

There's a bit of a story about this.  For years I would often talk to an elderly chap walking his dog down the road. Somehow we got talking about music and I told him I dabbled a bit and told him how pleased I was that I had just got a bit of music notation software.   I then embarrassed myself by asking him if he read the dots.  He told me that indeed he could, as he had studied for 4 years at the Royal Academy of music.  Ooops!  I further embarrassed myself by inviting him in and playing him some of my humble music.  He sat down at my keyboard and clearly he was in an entirely different league.

Sadly Howard died recently and his wife told me a bit more of his story.  Born in the North East of England his agent got him 6 weeks work in South Africa, which led to more work and eventually he become Musical director of the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation.  He played with people such as Shirley Bassy, Frank Sinatra and Spike Milligan.  Although I'm not sure Mr Milligan was particularly famed for his musical output.

Anyway his wife told me about this footage on Youtube and I thought I would share it.  Howard Morgan is conducting and playing the piano.  He comes to the front at about 3 minutes in.

That is a great story Paul! You never know a person's background unless you engage in conversation. Howard Morgan was a very accomplished, professional musician. R.I.P. Howard. Thanks for sharing.

This is a wonderful story. You can never tell, but musicians tend to find each other and its a common bond irrespective of age. Thanks for sharing.

I prefer to be outclassed as a musician than to be the most skilled musician. I mean, it's not hard to outclass me as a musician, but I have been in scenarios trying to make music with people who needed a lot of "put your fingers there." Playing with gifted musicians is a joy, like "I don't deserve to be here."
