Big World by Joe Jackson:

I threw this into the player in my car the other day after not listening to it for years. It instantly took me back in time. You see this album came out in my graduation (from high school) year; 1986. It was also the year of Vancouver's World Fair: Expo 86 and the theme was transportation. Looking back it was a night of pure magic and the stars were aligned when I saw Joe Jackson perform the album and some of his other hits at the outdoor Expo Theatre with my girlfriend the night after my grad party. I was extremely hung over but Joe and his marvelous band took me around the world that night and gave me one of the best memories of any concert I've ever experienced.

While listening to the CD the other day I remebered how frickin' good it actually is. It was recorded live with the audience asked not to applaud after each song. It just sounds incredible and the songs are some of his best. It was released as 3 sides on LP with the fourth side blank.

I found this gem below from Japan from the same tour. This was the opening song from his set. The lyrics are sublime.

I love this version - I find the Adam Levys guitar intervention inspiring.  Better than the cd version

I have just discovered a new Canadian Band that I absolutly LOVE, they are called Deep Dark Woods and hail from Saskatchewan, very, very good Canadian Alt.Country stuff.  I love these guys.

I saw this group last night at th Jazz Festival in Vancouver. They are from Vancouver but it was the first time I'd heard them. They are super cool and put on a great show for free.

I think you will like the The Little Stevies.  They sound like an aussie version of the Sundays.

cheers,

Ian

PS, for those you don't know aussie lingo, "dink" means to ride your bike while carrying someone else at the same time.  Traditionally, the passenger either sits on the cross bar  (if you trust the passenger, you can let them steer), or sits on the seat behind the rider.

Thomas Dolby Aliens Ate My Buick. Haven't listened to it for ages, still sounds good to me though and I think he plans to tour next year. Must keep an eye out. Actually that expression doesn't really make sense.  ???   Willie
