Really, no phantom power, I just got the damn sennhieser handheld condenser!
So what is the best dynamic handheld, sure sm57 or 58 or something else entirely?
Just started getting a better vocal sound in the car & I don't want to lose it.
Thanks,
Rock on!

Between the SM57 or 58 for vocals, I would recommend the 58. But there are plenty to choose from in the same dynamic category and price range. The  EV767 or AKG D5 come to mind.

You could always get a battery-powered mic pre-amp with phantom power such as the Nady DMP-2.

You can even get it at Walmart:

Or maybe you can find a bargain on a used one.

I'm sure there are other brands/models too, so shop around.

Thanks guys, I really wanted to trim the mobile studio down but I do like the idea of a battery powered preamp & cheaper than a new mic. I really wanted less cords, instrument into br...done. I've never recorded with a dynamic mic, opinions?

The Behringer preamp supplies phantom power - although I don't know if you can battery operate it!!! Probably not as it has a tube in it.

Yeah, and I love the sound of that preamp and the fact that it has settings for other instruments but alas no battery. The Nady one one looks very cool but I would like to find one that has settings for bass and guitar as well as vocals. The Berhinger one is st up in he corner studio hooked up to the DP24 but vocals in this house Are next to impossible. My wife is taking 2 weekend trips in October so once the kids are asleep I will use the 24 but until then its the car mostly for me.

In the thread ORH referenced Geir mentioned battery powered mics, so I did a little searching a little and found these

If I could figure out a mic stand/clip situation for the car I like this one ( more than I want to spend, I think I've spent enough...but....)

the 1/8 inch plug would be really cool if you could use effects on the aux input, I assume an adapter wouldn't make a difference. With the stand I might be able to rig some Velcro maybe

Price on this one almost seals the deal, but am I throwing $25 bucks away?

This one is interesting because of the multiple uses (i.e. Video possibilities)

Hi Hook. I used a dynamic mic  with the BR80 and there wasn't enough gain to be of use, instead I now use a Rode m3 condenser and it works great. Like yourself I record stuff in the motor, mostly vocals. It tends to be quieter than the house and I can find myself a nice quiet spot down by the river or lake without to much noise or distraction.

It's a real good mic the Rode m3, very well made, battery lasts forever and has a ten year guarantee, not that you'll need it. I bought mine used off an auction site two years ago, one my best buys yet. You won't be disappointed.
