Bit of silliness to keep us all amused.
Guess the intro. You guess right, you put the next one up :)
Here's an easy one to start....
Ballroom Blitz?
Correct Sir, your turn :)
Here ya go...
Correctly identified by oldrottenhead. (https://songcrafters.org/forum/general-discussion-b8/intro%27s/msg40467/#msg40467)
Here's another. Only four chords but I think they're instantly recognisable.
Title correctly identified by cuthbert (https://songcrafters.org/forum/general-discussion-b8/intro%27s/msg40439/#msg40439), and artist correctly identified by Sprocket (https://songcrafters.org/forum/general-discussion-b8/intro%27s/msg40622/#msg40622).
64Guitars, I find your first one a toughie - Led Zeppelin? Second one is easier (for me): 'For Your Love', by The Animals. :)

Half points for the correct title, but it wasn't done by The Animals (unless they covered it).
Ooph. I messed that second one up. ;D
I think rules may require I sit the rest of this round out... :)
I know the second one, and easy mistake saying The Animals too :)
First one is driving me nuts, I KNOW it ... but it wont come :(
I'm hoping someone gets this so I can take another chance... :D

Just kidding. I'd love to do it! Unfortunately, I don't really have time for it right now. But I'll definitely plan on making it a future project. Looking forward to it.
The Wizard by Uriah Heep
Written by Ken Hensley and Mark ClarkeHe was the wizard of a thousand kings
And I chanced to meet him one night wandering
He told me tales and he drank my wine
Me and my magic man kinda feeling fine
He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire
And as he spoke I felt a deep desire
To free the world of its fear and pain
And help the people to feel free again
Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts
'Cause then I know we'd find we're not so far apart
Everybody's got to be happy, everyone should sing
For we know the joy of life, the peace that love can bring
So spoke the wizard in his mountain home
The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone
And I will dream of my magic night
And a million silver stars that guide me with their light

Oops, missed this thread, so too late to claim the Magazine prize. Of course I got that classic song within a hearbeat of hearing it. It was originally used in the Buzzcocks song Lipstick and like some other of the early joint Devoto/Shelley Buzzcocks material it surfaced after Devoto had left. For example, the music for Boredom from Spiral Scratch became "Fast Cars" in post-Devoto Buzzcocks. But now I sound like an anorak.
Thanks for this one Ted. You have reminded me I should have put "Real Life" in my top 5 albums. I just loved that album and Magazine. Magazine and Wire were my two fave bands from the late 70s and really were the "art" side of punk (along with PiL I guess).
Cheers,
Nigel

I would not have gotten the Buzzcocks version of it without Googling. Well done, and a great question!
Here's my next one...
p.s. ...please pardon the lousy drums. I'm still struggling with arrangements in the MicroBR. :D
Listen to this - I think you can see why Devoto split from the Buzzcocks. He wanted to go in a darker, more overcoaty direction while Shelley went pure pop punk. I loved both mind!

cuthbert and Nigel: If two fans of Magazine like Wire, I need to check them out. Where should I start?
For art-punk, I'd recommend their first: 'Pink Flag'.
For art post-punk with a broader musical palette, I'd recommend 'Chairs Missing' and '154'.
None in any particular order. I can never decide which of these three I like best! :D
What Cuthbert said. Start with Pink Flag, it was seminal in taking the punk ideal (short, in some cases very short, simple high impact songs) with a deeper lyrical and sometimes challenging contnet (but not in a Dead Kennedys type way, hence the art punk tag). Then go to 154, more polished (close to Magazine), and then Chairs Missing (transitional). their later stuff is good but you need to be more selective. You can't go wrong with these three albums.
Cheers,
Nigel
I have no idea what Cuthbert's latest intro is!!!!
The opening notes and guitar tone sound a bit like The Strangler's 'Strange Little Girl' , but they're not.

The first one was already correctly identified yesterday by oldrottenhead as Uriah Heep's "The Wizard".

I'm not familiar with that Black Sabbath album but I just listened on YouTube and I think you played it quite well!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4E_yrILHcMIt sounds like Iommi either tunes down or plays it in a slightly different key, but that shouldn't have prevented anyone from recognizing it if they were familiar with the song. Unfortunately, I was not. By the way, I did the same thing with "The Wizard". I forgot that I should have tuned down a semitone or two. Didn't realize it until I posted the Uriah Heep YouTube video.
QuoteSo...anybody else want a go? Davo?
I don't think there's any need to take turns, is there? I suspect that there are several people who have song intros they'd like to post, and lots of people eager to guess the correct identity. So, if you have no objections SteveG (afterall, it's your topic), I'll post a couple more intros shortly. I just have to trim them in Audacity.
Go for it.
And yes, Iommi tunes a half tone down, originally because he managed to cut off his fingertips in a factory accident just before they went pro and it made the bends easier, but also for the darker trademark Sabbath sound.
Just watched the vid. That's Tony Martin on vocals, nobody should be allowed to sing this song but Dio!!!!!!!!
I think these will be really easy. But I guess it depends on whether you're familiar with the song or not. I'm guessing that many people will be.
To save a lot of unnecessary quoting, I suggest we refer to them by the filenames:

Okay. Since everyone's having a hard time with 64G-05, here are some clues:

I didn't want to be too esoteric, but I didn't think anybody would nail all three. 64 got the first two publicly and PM'd the third.

Yes, it is!!! I was waiting for somebody to notice...
And you are right on the intro. I have one more in me...
Here it comes...
You really nailed the tone on the Yes intro - brilliant!
Shame I missed it - one of my fave tracks!!!!
Well, Greeny - Maybe you can get this one... I realized this would be too easy if I finished the riff... Tone is bad - I gave up after 5min. of knob turning...
nope! not a clue!
Quote from: Greeny on July 31, 2009, 08:05:25 AMnope! not a clue!
Hint: The band got so sappy and crappy the drummer quit... Early 80's were their prime and best years.
This will give it away: From the same neck of the woods and timeframe as the B-52's
'Driver 8' by R.E.M.
Righto - Good job. And that be all for me folks.. I have nobody to pass the torch to, because all my participants have been there, done that.
Anybody else??

Since nobody is stepping up, here's a crazy easy one...
Blooby
And another easy one for those into classic rock.
Blooby
And finally one I don't know how readily people will get although I'm sure it won't take too long. One of my favorite tunes by this band.
It is not the introduction to the song but a repeating middle section.

I must say I feel slightly vindicated. I no longer feel like poo.

Just went through this entire topic listening to all of the intros and reminiscing. It was a lot of fun. If anybody wants to add some more and revive this old topic, be my guest.
