This is a lovely little tune from "Against the Grain" by Rory Gallagher. I recorded it this afternoon with acoustic guitar, piano, vocals, drums, bass and electric guitar. This time all by myself even the drums. I just started getting out my inner rock'n'roll voice, and that's probably why, as my father said when he heard it first, "overdoing it". Everything, except my synth drums, are recorded with a small mic. All recording, mixing and mastering are done by me. And I'm pretty proud.

Wow, great stuff.  I LOVE Rory Gallagher.  This is a pretty hard song to get right, your voice sounds really, good here.  Love your solo. You should be proud, this is dynamite.  Few timing issues in the middle section there, but other than that, fabulous job here.

I can't believe you haven't had any other comments yet, timing I guess, posted this right in the height of a Beatles fest with the covers board flooded right now.  Not to worry, it will get noticed.

I just remembered from your intro post that you are 13 Years old, is that right, still 13.  You know you have a serious musical soul to be able to pull something as adventurous as this and you pretty much nailed it too, very fine job here.

You chose a great song and you did a good job with it!!!
I would love to hear you do this song again a few months from now. I think that you will have the timing issues and your vocal delivery worked out.
I can hear the talent in you and look forward to hearing more of your posts!
I enjoyed listening!!

Oh yesss!

Big Rory fan here, and this has got the vibe :)

Both the vocals and the guitar. And you play all the other stuff!!

And... you're only 13!!!!  :o

Your father's right about the vocal - but it might also be your voice hasn't quite settled down enough (after breaking) in that register. I was singing in a choir when my voice broke, so I had a choir master watching over what I could do. I got interested in rock/pop when I was about 14 - I had the same trouble with that register. I could sing "sweet and quiet" or on a good day "very loud" round those notes. But if I went for the loud version without enough breath (and confidence) it would fold up on me like that... Keep using that area but don't force it too much, then it'll get stronger and stronger. If you don't use it, it'll never get much stronger - so keep working it, always make sure you've got enough breath in your lungs, but take it easy-ish for a year or so... don't overwork it... if your throat is sore after singing, that's ok, but it does mean it's time for a rest!

Anyway, I'm really, really impressed with this - I reckon Rory would've have been touched by it as well...

yeah thanks for the tips. i understand what youre saying; one day i have this loud and really bassy voice (i sing the bass part in my choir) and have no idea how i ever could of sung this. then on the other hand, i often tend to be able to break up when im at home, alone. its different kinds of singing techniques, i guess, but even. but when i have my moments on the upper register, i usually warm up with the other Rory song "A Million Miles Away".

AndyR

Oh yeah, Million Miles Away is probably my favourite - especially the Irish Tour 74 version. I've been tempted to do a stripped acoustic cover of it, but I want to play the guitar solo too much! It would be good to hear a version from you :)

Interesting you're a Bass in the choir. When my voice broke, I wanted to go to the Basses because it was the "manly" section :D. But the music-teacher/choir-master was convinced I could do a tenor's job so he talked me into that section with instructions to "take it easy for 6 months or so while your voice settles...".

Damn, this is GOOD! And it's remarkable (and great) that someone your age clearly appreciates and understands what real music is all about. You definitely didn't take the easy option with covering something this complex. The fact you did it all from scratch is mind-blowing. If you can do this now, I can't imagine how good you're going to be in a few years time.

The vocals are good already, but will only get better with time. You're developing a really good and strong style, and will find your 'true' voice with lots of practice in different genres. I didn't really find my voice until I started playing open-mics in my late 30's, so you have a good head start on some of us! And as for that guitar - you put a lot of us to shame. Brilliant, soulful playing.

Rory is such a legend. I think he'd have a smile on his face if he heard this.

I despair of the state of current music sometimes, and the x-factor / pop idol generation. But this restores my faith for the future. So thankyou for that.

Keep it up!
