Mp3 mode recording

I have tried several unsucessful attempts at recording our band live at a gig,
By recording the onboard MBR mic and recording directly to mp3. My thoughts
are this, if I can record the whole concert as a mp3 then I can just chop it up into
individual tracks at home later using Audacity. If I record [song/sel/new/etc...], I
think that the whole concert would probably be too big for the MBR song track
to handle mastering later, right? So, hence, the want to record using mp3....
But, here is my problem:
Each time that I have attempted to record us, the recording comes out
badly distorted, and basically unlistenable. I have reduced the input level to 75%.
I have reduced the mic sensitivity to -6, but still distorted!!!!!
What the F__K is the problem?
I want to get this issue resolved before we gig out again.
Maybe if I record the output of our soundboard into the MBR and use the mp3
recording mode? I am not sure, and I really do not want to waste another gig
recording to try it!
HELP!
Any ideas? Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

I recorded my girl friend's gospel choir concert as MP3 (about one hour) and then cut it down
to the songs we wanted. I used the t.bone ST40 external stereo microphone that came with
my Micro BR bundle. The result is not super HiFi quality but acceptable for a live performance.

It's the same problem that I have. Too LOUD!

I have to find a solution. When I do, I'll let you know....

I used to record a band when I first got the Micro (with very good results), and I had to back off the input to an unbelievable degree to get it to stop distorting.  If you're getting an acceptable playback volume, and it's still distorting, you still need to back off on the sensitivity in a big way.

I record our jams in my garage. We play loud !!!! I have been recording our weekly jams for over a year now and this method works great for me.

I set the micro br on a chair or something at least 2.5 ft off the ground (not a PA speaker or amp.... vibration is not your firend when recording). Set the sens to -12, input volume is 100%, effects should be turned off (but I also tried using the limiter only patch and that worked great too). Record each song in mono if your using the onboard mic.

Biggest piece of advice ----> get the microbr up off the ground if it isn't (stage foor, etc), and set the mic to -12 sens. I know you think it's going to be toooo quiet, but trust me. After the recording, Use BRexplorer to rip wavs to your PC and then master in a DAW to bring up levels and equalize as needed.

Thank you Dmann, this sounds like it might be the solution, seeing
as I've had the MBR on the floor [carpeted] in front of me on stage,
so as I can watch it is going okay.....And I would get constant 'over'
messages....even with the input level down to 20% and the sensitivity at
something like -6....

I'll give it a try at our next gig!
Cross your fingers for me.....LOL

Thank you all for your responses to my peril.
