This is the 16th episode of my film music covers, you can see and hear all the videos of this series here https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=33281.0

It is a 1969 film by Henry Colpi. The eponymous song is by Henry Colpi for the lyrics and Georges Delerue for the music. It is performed by Georges Brassens
This song is based on the first line of the famous sonnet by Joachim du Bellay, which evokes the happiness of being at home, surrounded by one's family, just like Ulysses who returned home
The main role is played by Fernandel (..and Ulysses)

the synopsis of the film[µ
Antonin is a farm worker in a small village in Provence. One day, his boss asks him to drive Ulysses, a 28-year-old work horse, to Arles to give him to a picador who will use him in bullfights.

Antonin would like to buy back his old companion to save him from a terrible death, but he does not have the money. So he decides to take Ulysses to the Camargue to end his life peacefully. But during the journey, an unexpected encounter prevents him from doing so.

Finally arriving at the bullring, Antonin witnesses the harsh reality of bullfighting: a horse is gored. Unable to bring himself to let Ulysses die in this way, Antonin takes him back and runs off to the Camargue to set his old friend free.

here are the translation of lyrics
Happy is he who like Ulysses,
Has made a beautiful journey!
Happy is he who, like Ulysses
Has seen a hundred landscapes
And then found again,
After many a crossing,
The land of green years!
On a summer's morning,
When the sun sings to your heart
How beautiful is freedom,
Freedom!
When you are better off here than elsewhere,
When a friend makes you happy
How beautiful is freedom,
Freedom!
With the sun and the wind,
With the rain and the fine weather,
We lived quite happily,
My horse, my Provence and I,
My horse, my Provence and I.
Happy who like Ulysses
Has made a beautiful journey!
Happy is he who, like Ulysses,
Has seen a hundred landscapes
And then found again,
After many crossings,
The land of green years!
On a beautiful summer morning,
When the sun sings to your heart
How beautiful is freedom,
Freedom!
When it's all over for you,
When a friend dries your tears
How beautiful is freedom,
Freedom!
Beaten by sun and wind,
Lost in the middle of the ponds,
We'll live well contented,
My horse, my Camargue and me,
My horse, my Camargue and me.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
