I think people usually go for the "you sound like Zappa" when the music is something they don't really comprehend. Something that's hard to categorize and stinks of sonic weirdness.

I think this sounds like Zappa.

The drummer seems to be from the "less is more" school of thought which works for the song. Whereas the bass player feels a bit shy. He's sitting in (or with his hands) in the pocket and letting the guitar player to bask in the glory.

From the sounds of it, the singer is so far gone that the band really tries to do their best without drawing too much attention from the singer. One could never know what such a cunning linguist might do!
