I always secretly liked this song.  Fine cover - and I wish I could sing like this.

Usually after I've posted a song, the shutters come down on it and I'm on to the next one. Not so this time. I've just changed the song file for version three. I'm a lot happier with this one, and stripped it back (removed the harmony except in the chorus, simplified the percussion) and brought the main vocal up in the mix.

I like your stripped down instrumentation and your guitar picking skills.  I think we both played it with D chord shapes (is that right?) but I figured out I could sing it high with capo on 5th fret, if I recall correctly (4th is easier in retrospect!). I don't know if I could possibly sing high with capo on the 7th.  Since I practiced singing this song a lot I would be interested for my own fun to see if I can sing over your track; probably I will have to also sing lower. But it would be fun to try. No worries if you don't want to share it. I enjoyed listening to your version!

I just had another listen to your version and you did a great job with. I think you were wise to drop the key. I did what I always do and finish the backer then figure out it's too high for me to sing. I did try it high at first but I think my cat would have done a better job. Then dropping it an octave was nearly as bad. I should have gone down three or four frets.

Have always admired this song from a distance but I think your close-up performance shows what a really well-written song it is. Very nicely done!

These days I merely dabble at being old and wise.
But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.

It's okay, this isn't a trashy punk cover or anything.
This is a song I've known and loved for 50 years and it's an emotional subject so I've been respectful to it.
It's a fairly naked cover - acoustic guitar (Ibanez, capo up on the seventh fret), bass (Squier), vocals and GB percussion. Doesn't leave any place to hide for the vocals unfortunately.

Hi ODH,
Very nice recording, I really like the intro to the song.
Capo on the 7th fret, wow.  I would probably wanted to hear this song sang by you a bit higher, but you are already on the 7th fret.
Love this.

I do like Bread... I have a greatest hits collection and I love it. I think this is great Nick. It's funny, most of us are pretty self critical on here, I guess that is the nature of creative people, but I thoroughly enjoyed this, listening late at night and it's perfect.

I didn't know or forgot this was a Bread tune. Excellent choice for this fest. What a good song. Love the starkness of this.

Like your updated version - the extra vocal part is cool.

An often overlooked fact about this song is that it is a tribute to Gates' father, the lyrics sung to him.  Many casual listeners who don't listen carefully to the lyrics assume it is just another sappy love song that some guy is singing to a girlfriend he lost.

I just listened again to this Nick and then back to Doug's version.  it's crazy because even though they are the same song they sound so different from each other they are actually just like different songs.  I love both these versions...
