I am learning to finger pick the guitar.  In the past I have been almost exclusively a flat picker.  I have always admired fingerpicking styles.  Then I got thinking about it and I finger pick the bass quite a lot so why can't I the guitar?  First off I am having to build callouses on the right hand, guitar players know what I am talking about.  Ya just gotta have them... so that takes a bit of time and avoiding the temptation to play too much at first and end up with blisters.

This is a simple G C and D progression.  You can make them sound so much more with the finger embellishments!  I kind of had a song called I wanna be like Tim but it just got too corny trying to name all the SC's I like so well and I figured I would forget someone so I dropped that idea and came up with this excuse to record the Hummingbird.  I am not adept at recording a voice and guitar at the same time but I managed to get closer on this with Zoom R24 and added some effects from the Bandlab...

Considering you're learning finger-style guitar, Stephen this is damn good and that acoustic sounds beautiful. A very nice intimate song too and well performed.

This is such a vulnerable and open performance that it makes it impressive from the get go.

Finger picking is certainly worth learning (note to myself) as it adds more tools in the songwriters toolbox. And especially useful when performing songs in this manner.

The chord progression might be simple, but it's enough. The real focus here are the lyrics.

The lyrics are really open and there are maybe 1-2 lines that sounded like a filler. And only so because the lyrics are otherwise so filled with emotion.

Only a person with a gentle soul can make anything like this.

Nice song, Stephen. Sounds like you're getting the hang of fingerpicking!

Getting better at fingerpicking is on my bucket list - I can start out okay, but it turns all thumbs pretty quickly when I try. More practice for this boyo...

Lovely acoustic sound. Yes, you can really do a lot with fingerstyle playing. Sounds great and I love the lyrics here, they have a very dreamy and reflective quality to them. Excellent Stephen!

Congrates on adding to you songwriter's toolbox.
I agree you already sounds pretty flipping good, the picking, singing and the recording.

Keep at it.

Fingerpicking is coming along well, Stephen. If you hadn't mentioned it was new to you I wouldn't have known.  This is also a fine song with heartfelt emotional lyrics and vocal delivery.

Well done Stephen on your finger picking song! I like the alternating finger picking and strum style. I like to use that myself. The more you use it the easier it gets, but you are well on your way. Great words and vocal.
