This one is inspired by a true story of how Rome was under threat from all kinds of enemies and decided it needed a 'new' goddess to protect them from the Barbarian and Goth hordes. So they imported Magna Mater (Great Mother) from Asia Minor, and carried her effigy up the Tiber river with a host of castrated priests.

Typical kind of lyrical inspiration  ;D ::)

It's a personal favourite of my songs.

Features Telecaster, Jazz bass, and vocals, plus Garageband drums and synths.

Magna Mater

This eternal city's blue
waiting for a girl who looks like you
and through the colonnades
the fizzing sun like lemonade
testing if our faith in you is true

magna mater save me from these seven hills of rain
my republic has been crumbling
so it's time to lift your veil
and bring your downcast eyes to the temples in your name
and love me

murdered on the Senate steps for you
it's carved upon the walls and taught in schools
carried up the river - the Tiber black and blue
and all the priests castrate themselves for you

magna mater save me from these seven hills of rain
my republic has been crumbling
so it's time to lift your veil
and bring your downcast eyes to the temples in your name
and love me

Oh Magna Mater a la lune

A very nice surprise to hear a new Greeny Monday song! I like the opening chords and melody. They are very Beatle-esque sounding to me (a compliment). Maybe a bit more John Lennon but it's absolutely an all Greeny toon. That is quite a story the lyric tells. Well done!

Melodic, jangly and sweet - and lyrically brilliant.

What a great song Tim.

Beautiful melodic guitar work and clever vibrato effect in there as well, all coupled with a great arrangement. Very nicely sung, performed and recorded. But I just love the lyrics, a real standout for me. Such a clever inspiration for a song, and it appears to me that there's a double meaning in those lyrics as well. A really enjoyable listen this Tuesday (catching up, sorry!).

Life is not about the number of Breathes you take, it is the amount of times your breathe is taken away

Great song indeed. really great.

P.S. It's funny how only people from Latin nations pronounce the "GN" in "Magna" the right way: it should sound like Spanish say "Senor" (sir), if you understand what I mean...
