I saw this song by Mach posted back in March 2018:  https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=27887.msg335040#msg335040

He had originally entered it as a possible entry for the PaddyFest, but then 64 Guitars said:

Quote from: 64 GuitarsNice recording. However, Loch Lomond is a lake in Scotland. I can't accept this recording in its present form for PaddyFest since it's not about Ireland...  ...If you want to redo the vocal tracks using the Irish lyrics and repost this as "Red is the Rose"...

I play this song with our band and our version of this song was recorded live at a show recently by none other than Mr. Hook.  I'm not sure what he used to record us with, but I KNOW it wasn't that small, little, teeny tiny, itsy bitsy, eensy weensy recorder he uses for his 'in-the-car-recordings' that he often posts here..  ;)

Since Loch Lomand WAS the first and the most well known version of this melody, we tag the first verse and chorus on at the end.  I start the song off then Don takes a verse, and then for Loch Lomand our female vocalist closes things out (so the main thing the audience remembers afterwards is her lovely voice..)  :D

One thing we learned after listening to this is:  When we're singing together we have to tighten coming in at the same time!   But overall I think the recording came out good.   (Mostly due, I'm sure to Hooks excellent recording, mixing and editing skills!!)

Red is the Rose-?Traditional?(Often attributed to Tommy Makem) / Loch Lomand-Traditional
Performed by Third Man Out w/ romidon
   Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows,
   And fair is the lily of the valley;
   Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
   But my love is fairer than any.

Come over the hills, my bonny Irish lass
Comer over the hills to your darling;
You choose the rose, love, and I'll make the vow
And I'll be your true love forever.
   Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows,
   And fair is the lily of the valley;
   Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
   But my love is fairer than any.

'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
And the moon and the stars they were shining;
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my love forever.
   Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows,
   And fair is the lily of the valley;
   Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
   But my love is fairer than any.

It's not for the parting of  my sister Kate
It's not for the grief of my mother,
"Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.
   Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows,
   And fair is the lily of the valley;
   Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
   But my love is fairer than any.

By yon bonnie banks, and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever want to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
   Oh! ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
   And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
   But me and my true love will never meet again
   On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

I'm just releasing this for anyone who might enjoy this type of music AND to highlight (once again) the superb tech-xpertise of the one and only Hook.

This is such a beautiful performance brother. I still have the whole second set that I need to mix down for you guys. I'm worthless and sadly the machine is packed up and Storage. I bet your card is in it.
Excellent musicianship, beautiful harmonies & very well recorded if I say so. I think I had three condenser mics on you guys going in to my Tascam dp-24sd. That was a fun night. Rock on!

Pure class... this is a beautiful performance, hats off to all involved (sure is a great recording!) I have been in Killarney a couple of times. The first time I was only 18 and at that age the last thing on my mind was beautiful scenery... but I will never forget when I saw the lakes for the first time... beautiful.

Great stuff guys... I actually like the slight differences in the vocals coming in at fractionally different timings at the beginning. To me each is coming in when it feels right to them and adds to the humility of the performance... but overall that was super.

Very nice performance, great feeling and in particular excellent vocals and lovely harmonies. Sounds "live" to me, so a few little variations here and there just give it that "human" feeling. The vocal timings didn't stand out to me.

Would be nice downing a pint or two to you guys.

magnificent I like everything: the piano, the wisthle, the violin, the voices... it's very beautiful... I listen again tonight sipping a good beer ( brewed in Savoy, on the shores of MY lake (Lac du Bourget, France)

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Very well done indeed and the recording was very clear. I didn't realize there were two songs with different lyric and titles. I've only heard the Loch Lomand version. Everything sounds good to my ears and I wouldn't worry too much about the backing vocal timings....this is live and those are the things that give it the appeal of a live performance.
