An alternative to the usual recorders

I didn't know anything about this TouchMix series by QSC. No computer required.

Even the basic "8" model is rather expensive though,

but judging by what I see in their tutorial videos it is a compact and complete solution both as a mixer and a recording studio. It records on external HD, or any USB drive. There's a free software for connecting the unity to/from computers if you want further ediing on a DAW, a huge number of effects presets  for almost any istrument, touch screen faders...

Nice. Expensive but nice.

Checked it out. Cool... but you're correct. Expensive.

At that price, I'll get an audio interface, an ipad, and put them into a nice chassis together.

I can't stand touchscreens for this though, I like physical knobs.

QSC are actually five years old.

Probably the best all-in-one solution (audio interface + recorder + control surface + MIDI) is the Tascam Model 12. Less expensive than QSC recorders.
