I first heard this song on the John Peel festive fifty in about 1984/5 (Men They Couldn't Hang version).  Peel said after it "it's the barely suppressed anger that makes it such a wonderful song for me".  I was recording the show that night (I still have it somewhere) and I've loved the song ever since.

Thank you for bumping this JP, it's a great version and I'd missed it before. And especially poignant with the news of Tommy

even Eric Bogle, the Australian folksinger author of this song to which I sent  MP3 responded nicely to me and was impressed by Tommy's beautiful voice (a little in the registers of Leonard Cohen, I find)

Great Bump JP, I was giving the job of selling Poppies in our community so I did a painting over 4 foot in height and placed the poppies and collection each side of it, did quite well, Once again great bump pal.
