This song is from Dylan's 1976 album Desire.  The contributions of Scarlet Rivera on violin and Emmy Lou Harris' backing vocals make this a particularly beautiful album in my opinion.

The violin drew me in to do a cover with the mando.  It was a fairly quick and fun recording project.

Hope you like it and thanks for listening.

Nice tremolo-picking, Rolow! Don't know the original song, but I enjoyed listening to your version. Would love to hear more about how you put everything together.

First, I can't take much creative credit as this is pretty close to the version on the "Desire"  LP.  One thing I've kind of got in the habit of doing is double tracking the rhythm guitar part and panning them far left and far right.  This creates and supports a broad stage for the rest of the players to use.  In this song, the bass and the mando do kind of a dance on that big, broad stage.  First I sat down with the Squier Jaguare bass and learned the part, a little like the album version, but a bit my own also.  Then the same with the mando, which is sitting in for the violin played by Scarlet Rivera.  For that reason I used quite a bit of tremelo, but didn't want to over do it as the mando has other nice capabilities.  Besides, I'm not nailing the vibrato yet, but getting a little better.  Takes a lot of hours to build up the requiset muscle memory.  I panned those mid-left and mid-right and pretty much balanced the volumes.  Did you notice the gypsie tamborine in the far left.  The hand played electronic drums have each piece panned out in the drum brain, with the ride cymbal to the right, so the tamborine and ride cymbal play off of each other a little bit.  All that's left is the main vocal and I double tracked the backup in falsetto.  All tracking went into the BR600 and then is moved over to Audacity for mixing and mastering.  It all goes over dry except the vocals and I master those tracks individually so effects like reverb are carried over to Audacity.  I do this because Audacity reverb sux imo. (Or maybe I just don't know how to use it.)

Hope that's the stuff you were looking for.  I'm open to any suggestions you might have.

Hello ROLOW....excellent!

I particularly like the mandolin, and voices

I had deposited some time ago a version with my daughter on singing ... and Garrick THIAS a fiddler from Ontario had made me a violin part

You can listen to this version with a small video on YT here

Thanks Ron! That's the kind of info that I always find of interest, when it comes to recordings. You never know when an idea sitting in the back of your mind will come forward - sometimes, just when you need it!

The falsetto backing are brilliant!  Until I saw your reply, I was wondering how you got Emmy Lou to back you up.

Love the tight little string band going on here, and played-by-human drums.  The mando especially adds to the authentic atmosphere.

But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.
