Hi! I'm predominantly an acoustic player but of late have been getting into playing electric a bit more. I know the BR1600 is absolutely loaded with overdriven guitar presets but I'm struggling to find useable clean ones and was wondering if anybody would care to share any tips as to go about this? I don't need anything heavily effected, I'm really just looking for the sound of an electric plugged straight into a decent combo amp (like say, a Fender Twin or Vox AC30). Ideally I would do just that ie: mic up an amp but a) I don't have one AND b) the reason I don't have one is because, where I live, I'm surrounded by neighbours on every side plus I tend to record in the wee small hours so mic'ing an amp's not very practical.

Under the circumstances it looks like I'm just stuck with having to DI electric guitar (& bass!) but, although I've managed to find a few useable overdriven sounds (the majority of the presets on the BR1600 are!) I've yet to stumble across clean presets that I think: "Yes, that'll do!" To date the closest I've got to a straight, clean electric guitar sound are as follows: PRESETS P003; P031 and P045 but, again, they sound a bit too processed/squashed to my ears. Any advice in this field greatly appreciated!

Why not make your own presets? The preset patches (P001-P100) can't be re-written. However, the User patches (U001-U100) and Song patches (S001-S100) can. That's what they're there for. By default, the user patches contain exact copies of the preset patches, and the song patches contain copies of the user patches. So, instead of selecting preset patch P025 (SLDN STACK), for example, you could select U025 or S025. Now go into the settings for the patch and find the COSM PreAmp&Speaker Type setting. Judging by the patch name, I think you'll find that the Type is set to SLDN which models a Soldano SLO-100 and gives an overdriven amp sound. If you don't want an overdriven sound, simply change the amp type from SLDN to CLEANTW (models a Fender Twin Reverb), VO CLEAN (models the clean sound of the VOX AC-30TB), or whatever you want (there are many amp models available to choose from). You can also change any of the other patch settings to get the sound you want. For example, you might want to adjust the amp's Gain and Level settings to adjust the amount of distortion, turn off unwanted effects (delay, modulation, overdrive/distorton, etc.) or change their settings to your liking. When you've got a sound you're happy with, write the patch back to the same User or Song patch and change its name to something meaningful that you'll recognise.

The BR-1600 manual has details on all of the settings in each effect. These settings are basically the same as what you'd find on real amps and effects pedals. Adjust them in the same way you would if you were using the real hardware. There are no right or wrong settings. Just experiment with them as you would with the actual hardware until you find a sound you like, then save the patch. You might find it helpful to start by turning everything off except the amp so you can work on that first. Then you can add effects such as chorus, tremolo, delay, etc. as desired and adjust their settings to your liking.

Cheers 64, that's really helpful! Pretty obvious really the way you've spelt it out so articulately but, I dunno, I'd just gotten locked into trying to work with the presets & had forgotten you can customise these things so thanks for the reminder! (That said, I have to admit, I'm really not so great on the behind-the-scenes altering stuff front - I'm very much an end-user so I will need to get my thinking cap on.) I'm STILL surprised at just how few clean guitar presets there are with this model and, of the few clean presets there are, there's really nothing I like. When it comes to guitar presets the BR-1600 seems to be good for pretty much every crunchy, overdriven and out'n'out HEAVY guitar sound known to man yet seriously lacking where clean sounds are concerned - I'm not sure why that is. OK, I'm off to TRY to 'find my sound(s)', wish me luck ..... Thanks again!
