The difference between User Patch and Song Patch

I thought Song Patches was were you could save all the effects settings within a song so that you would have a template with your favourite effect patches like a certain drum set, Guitar effects ( Per channel ) to load when you wanted to make a new song.

But I cant seem to find what a Song Patch is or does


Any help is greatly appreciated !

A song patch serves the same purpose as a user patch. They both store the current settings for a single effects patch. You use them when you've adjusted the settings of a patch and you want to save it so you can recall those same effects settings later.

Song patches are stored on the removable SD memory card in the song folder. I couldn't find the number of song patches you can save on a BR-80 but here are the numbers for the Guitar bank of some other BRs:

Micro BR		80
BR-800		80
BR-864		99
BR-1200		120

Note that this is the number of patches you can save per song since each song folder has its own file to save the patches in.

A patch saved in one song cannot be used in another song (unless you manually copy the effects file from one song folder to another using your computer).


User patches are stored in internal, non-removable flash memory. The number of patches you can save is the same as for song patches, except that there's only one user patch area. On the Micro BR, for example, you can save only 80 user patches (Guitar) for the entire unit, regardless of how many songs there are.

The advantage of user patches is that they can be accessed from any song.

The advantage of song patches is that you can have so many of them since each song has its own file for the song patches.

So, user patches are best when you've created a patch that you'll want to use in multiple songs. Song patches are best when you've created a patch for a specific song and you don't plan to use it in other songs.

I find that I usually create unique patches for each song, so I save them as song patches.

Another advantage of song patches is that they can be backed up to your computer simply by making a backup of the song or the memory card. On most BRs, the user patches can't be backed up unless you manually copy each patch individually from the user area to the song patch area of the current song. Then, after you've copied all of the user patches to the song patch area (which is a long and tedious process), you would backup that song folder to your computer. Restoring your patches involves the same long, tedious process, but copying from song patch to user patch. The BR-800 provides a function for batch-copying all of the user patches to the current song and vice-versa. But, as far as I can tell, none of the other BRs have that feature.

I usually make aClean, Crunch, Solo and a Bass favourite patch and use them in most songs but sometimes I use something specific if a song calls for it.

The BR-80 has 100 Song patches.

The BR-800 is looking better and better but I am not quite certain it is possible to record/pan control etc 8 tracks independently  ( One at a time ) just like the BR-80 or if it's 4 mono tracks and 2 Stereo tracks only

It is indeed 4 mono + 2 stereo. You can of course record on 2 (or more) tracks, pan them as you like, and then bounce them to a stereo track to free up the mono tracks. I would have liked to have 8 mono tracks on the BR800 as well, but it's usually not a big problem.

The Tascam dp008 has 8 mono tracks but the only effect is reverb. If your not Dependant on the effects it's a great machine. In ways I really so prefer it to the br80 but I'm trying to leave a smaller seat impression (that's a stupid car studio joke).
