10,000 Original Songs

I noticed that the Original Songs Board has 10,009 topics.  Does that mean there are >10,000 original songs posted there?

I thought 'probably Jim'.  Then I counted back from the most recent post to where the 10,000th would be (if there were a one to one mapping of song to post) and, yes, Oldrottenhead - Just Keep Going.  Which isn't scientific in any way, but it would be appropriate.

He's checking through all 10,000 right now, crossing off all the duplicates, triplicates, etc (eg demos vs finished versions posted months later).

He's also having to decide whether a finished instrumental and the same instrumental with ORH singing counts as two songs or not...



Regardless, it is a bit of a milestone.

In theory, yes. In reality, no.

The Post Your Work boards are meant to only contain song post topics. If that were true, then 10,009 topics would mean 10,009 songs. But it's not completely true. There's at least one topic that doesn't contain a song - Pedro's How to upload your song & Rules. And there may be a few others.

Each topic in the Post Your Work boards is meant to contain a single unique song in the top message of that topic. Revisions and remixes of that recording are meant to replace the attachment or link in the top message. They should never be posted in a separate topic. Unfortunately, many people have failed to follow this rule, so there are lots of duplicate topics for a single song. Because of this, I'd say we haven't truly reached 10,000 songs yet. We've only reached 10,000 topics which isn't quite the same thing. It should be, but it isn't.

The Original Songs board is meant to contain only original songs - no covers. But people sometimes post in the wrong board. Usually when that happens, one of the admins will move the topic to the right board, but I'm sure there are a few topics that we've missed. So, I suspect that a few of those 10,009 topics contain covers. Likewise, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few original songs in the Cover Songs board. If anyone spots a song that's clearly in the wrong board, please tell one of the admins so we can move it to the right board.

Some members have posted songs then later deleted the attachment. But the topic remains with no song in it. So, some of those 10,009 topics might not contain a song at all.

And some topics contain links to offsite songs that no longer exist.

Because of the points above, and probably a few more I haven't thought of, it's impossible to say. And, as I said, I suspect that we haven't truly reached 10,000 unique, original songs yet anyway because of duplicate topics, deletions, posting in wrong board, etc.

The only thing I can tell you is this. There are currently 10,009 topics in the Original Songs board. Based on that, topic #10,000 is Simple Chance - by Mike Huntingford.

But we shouldn't attach too much significance to this one post. It's almost certainly not the 10,000th original song posted. As I said, we most likely haven't reached 10,000 songs yet. In fact, it's not even the 10,000th topic posted in the Original Songs board because some topics have been deleted, moved to other boards, split, or merged. So all we can really say is that there are currently 10,009 topics in the Original Songs board, and if we sort them by topic number, then topic #10,000 is currently Simple Chance - by Mike Huntingford. This is bound to change due to topic moves, splits, merges, etc.

Still, it is interesting that we have over 10,000 topics in the Original Songs board. That's more than double the number of topics in the Cover Songs board (currently 4,471).
