Another one from my ongoing jazz project. I wanted to do another up-tempo tune but thought I'd steer clear of doing another swing type thing with a walking bass line. The riff came first, then it was basically a 12 bar blues that I tweaked & mangled into it's current shape. I couldn't decide what to do with the bridge sections... it needed some kind of "lift" & I tried every keyboard VST I had and nothing worked. In the end I dug out an old tubular bell patch I downloaded ages ago & never got round to using until now. The only downside is that it sounds like our doorbell which drives the dog mad every time I play it  ;D

Thanks for listening!

Man, this is great!  You are seriously accomplished, both in your writing and your playing.  It puts me in mind, in places, of Steely Dan, yet it's completely original.  Thank you for posting this!

Redler

Awesome jazzy guitar! Enjoyable listening! Somehow this feels like your "band" is playing LIVE!

Breezy, tight and effortlessly cool. The production is immaculate, and I really wish I could play like that! Fantastic.

Thanks chaps! I must confess to being quite pleased with how this one turned out. I'm so pleased with Redler's comment about it sounding like a live band - trying to give a sense of spontaneity to something which is recorded in stages with programmed drums is perhaps the most challenging aspect of home recording. I basically start with a rough sketch, just using a generic drum loop, copied & pasted throughout the whole tune, then put down a bass line & rhythm guitar parts. Then I do umpteen lead guitar takes at the whole thing - I'll spend a week just laying down lead guitar parts sometimes. Then I cobble together a composite of the best bits of all takes, then practice the heck out of it so it's so familiar I can improvise around it at will, then I'll record that part in as few takes as possible to maintain a live feel to it. Then, it's time to go back in and tweak the drums - where the fills should be; where to go to a ride cymbal vs hihat; tweak the velocities of the different sections etc etc etc... finally, I'll do the same polishing process on the bass & rhythm guitar & then spend ages doing mix after mix after mix until it all just gels in the way I want. Then I play it to the missus who will generally listen indifferently while playing Candy Crush  ;D

John you are some talent. It may not be swing but it is definitely, swinging.

The layering is incredible and I find your attention to detail (mixing and remixing) admirable.
I do appreciate the play by play on its production.

As a quasi musician, I find hearing the process of others inspiring and enlightening.

It's a very cool piece.
