This is a cover of the 1967 hit single by Amen Corner. It was written in the 1920s by Harry Burke and originally called "Me and My Gin". Bessie Smith recorded it on 25 August 1928.

This is the first song I've ever done completely in MIDI. I programmed the drums manually in the sequencer but I played the rest of the tracks on my AKAI MIDI keyboard controller and recorded it to MIDI tracks in Qtractor, then edited those MIDI tracks to fix my sloppy timing, etc. Here's a list of the SoundFont instruments I used on each track:

  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Bass
  • Hammond Organ
  • Cello
  • Drums
  • Baritone Sax
  • Alto Sax
  • Trombone
  • Trumpet (low)
  • Trumpet (high)
  • Trumpet Section

Thanks to oldrottenhead for the vocal.

Stay away from me, yeah,  'cause I'm in my sin
Stay away, everybody,  'cause I'm in my sin
If this joint is raided, somebody give me some gin

Lord, I don't want no clothes
I don't even want no bed to lay my head
I don't want no clothes
And I don't even want no bed to lay my head
Fill me with good liquor and I'll be true instead

Lord, when I'm feelin' high
And I ain't got nothin' else to do but lay my head
When I'm feelin' high
Lord, I ain't got nothin' else to do but lay my head
If this joint is raided, somebody give me some gin

Somebody give me some gin
Somebody give me some gin
Somebody give me some gin
Whoa-oh-oh!  I want some gin

This song is ready for radio play.

Excellent craftsmanship in the music and vocal. Smooth as silk.
I especially like the harmonic interplay between the horns and the other instruments.

I must steal ORH's voice.

Well done!

Very well done guys! Hadn't heard this song before but your take on it does it some serious justice! ORH your vocals are classy, authentic and dripping with soul (as usual) :).  The instrument voices are chosen wisely and played fluidly and accurately. Great attention to detail 64!!  This is an AWESOME cover ;)
