So you can connect a MIDI keyboard controller to your iPad to play Animoog, ThumbJam, or any other iPad music app, and record the sound from that app directly into your favourite DAW running on your PC or Mac without having to connect any audio cables - it's all done over USB.

See the demonstration that starts at 4:05. He even connects a second iPad wirelessly to run Animoog on the first iPad and send the audio from Animoog into the Mac.

I think I'm going to buy an Arturia BeatStep when they come out in April. It's only $99 and the pads seem to be very sensitive (in a couple of the videos, the demonstrator triggers a pad with his pinky). It looks like a very versatile MIDI controller and step sequencer for the money.

It would be great for creating drum patterns using the sequencer. Once you've created a pattern, you can hold down the Store button and press one of the 16 pads to assign the pattern to that pad. Then you can create up to 15 more patterns and assign them to the other pads. Now you can play back a pattern in the sequencer and change to a different pattern in real time by holding down the Recall button and pressing the desired pad.

Of course, it can be used for more than just drums. You could also sequence note patterns to play through a soft synth or even a hardware synth. Or you can use the 17 rotary controls and 16 pads to control parameters in your favourite synth or any MIDI software or device. And you can store up to 16 different control setups (for different apps, for example). Pretty cool for $99.

Thanks, 64.  I am overwhelmed by some of the new options I have at my feet, but that device looks like a workable solution to getting my feet wet (without breaking the bank).  

On another note, I wonder is this thing below is like a giant Kaossilator.

That controller does look cool & an affordable way to get into midi I guess. I know nothing about midi, where do the sounds come from. Does their software have them or do you download them, buy them? Sorry for being midi stupid but I'm kinda interested.
