How to know when your mix is finished

Here's an interesting article on tips to determine if your mix is done that some might find interesting. I found his comment interesting on how many mixes (99) were done on Michael Jackson's Billy Jean before they selected mix #2 as the keeper. So I guess the following 97 were just a waste of time and money in this case, lol.

I found it a good and short read.

A great article tho beyond me on most points...but all true. A lot of attention to what it takes to qualify as pro-quality and commercial-ready.  I don't know if it makes sense but as an amateur/hobbiest, the point where I finally decide to quit trying to 'fix it in the mix' is when I think 'It ain't gonna get any better than that unless I go back and start re-tracking the whole thing' ... and of course, usually that's the end of it.   :D

These days I merely dabble at being old and wise.
But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.

Lol!

I thought I was the only one Ken - but I guess I give up a lot earlier than you do.

If I played my stuff next to any of my favourite tracks, I'd look for a new hobby.

You know your mix is finished when you recognize that your one or two first mixes were good enough...

Meh. Lightweights. ;D

Where I spend the biggest amount of time is on the arrangements. I do a lot of revisions.  The album I'm making right now has been like making a Stanley Kubrick movie. ;D I've spent 3 years on it. I make pretty thick tracks, so I spending a lot of time adding stuff, and then an equal amount of time taking stuff out.  If I take my computer and throw it out the window, I'll know that I'm done with the mix. ;D

sometimes, even when doing a lot of tracks in a song, you have to know when to stop, rather to keep trying to improve even more upon it. I notice that sometimes in order to try and keep perfecting it you can wind up actually making it worse!

It's finished when I can't stand listening to it anymore... ;)

Since I love proverbs, as we say "Il meglio è nemico del bene", that in English should sound more or less: "better is enemy of good", and IMO this applies to mixing too...  :D
