Ah - dinner Jazz - very nice Haylie! Great job.

There is an art to recording - they call it the sweet spot. The truth is we all spend a lot of time trying to improve our recording. I suggest that you keep experimenting - and don't be afraid to try stuff out - if its not what you want, there is the delete button :-).

NB if you think the sound is a little washed out - try eq'ing - adding some mids tends to give it more body. Also you can add some (not a lot) of compression on the way in, that squashes the loud bits and the quiet bits (that's what compression is), so may help with the sound.

Very well done, Haylie!  You have a gorgeous vox.

Have you tried increasing distance between you and the mic?  Or placing the mic a bit above your head to get more indirect sound?

Bruno's absolutely right about experimenting to find the sweet spot and tweaking the mids to beef up the tone.

I agree w Geir, your recordings are sounding better all the time.  Worth the effort to get that vox recorded as well as possible.  DD

Thanks for listening!

Thanks Geir and DD - I'm already 12 inches away from the mic and I have it slightly lower than me and kinda sing over it but will definately try it higher, thanks. I've tried mixing it in Audacity today, which I think sounds better and will post later. No idea what to do with the EQ in Audacity though - was gonna try and look it up later.

Very nice On strong voices you can do two things Sing off axis from your mic try a little above and off to the side and apply compression during the recording to level the peaks. Love the jazz sound and this is nice

Life is not about the number of Breathes you take, it is the amount of times your breathe is taken away

Hilary

Thanks Tim - I've recorded it following your advice. I think it's much improved. Thanks everyone for your help.

Sounds GREAT, Haylie!  Well done!  I wouldn't worry too much about EQ in Aud.  Good to know, but tons of options that can bog one down.  You have fine natural vox that shouldn't require much or any EQ IMHO.  But I too am pretty newbie to the recording end and try to keep things simple.

Tim makes a real good point about compression while you record.  I tend to record w a weak signal and use Aud effects to amplify, compress, and then reamplify individual tracks to get stronger signal.  Easy to do and doesn't seem to affect the 'natural' tone of the gtr or vox.  Onward!  DD

Thanks for listening!
