Quote from: bruno on February 29, 2012, 04:59:37 PMand improvisation is a totally alien experience for the classical musician. It is completely outside formal music training - and makes them sweat real bad! So if classical musician is winding you up, just say - "lets jam" :-)

That is the truth. I played trombone for eight years up until high school graduation. I don't regret the experience, but I would have rather used my Arban book for cracking walnuts. My parents would not let me play the guitar. I was also forced to go to church every Sunday until the age of 18, but that's another story...

Anyway, I see no harm in playing whatever notes that suit my fancy and let it hopefully turn into music that sounds good to me.

The alternative use of a guitar (beer) stand is not only funny, but true!

Really? Wow impressive! I can`t fathom how people play those wind instruments. Tremendous skill. I have no patience for them actually. I smell a trombone collab coming on now! :)

Hook

I played tenor saxophone during middle & high school, in symphonic, jazz & marching bands. I was even the Drum Major my senior year of Marching Band and had the opportunity to learn to conduct and attempt to use the the skills of a conductor as a band leader and for entertainment purposes (competition & parade routines). It truly is a difficult job and one that takes a seriously accomplished musician to do well. Outside of the obvious classical applications look at the Big Bands. The conductors were often on the spot arrangers, blending these 20 plus musicians, song after song & often taking solo's themselves. It might not look like the musicians are watching. but they most certainly are!

The cartoons pretty darn funny though!
