i started with a pick, and found it was way better to use fingers. i dont use my little finger, so it is like having 3 fingers. it helps you do rapid fire riffs and well as funky broken riffs. plus since i prefer a deep booming bass, rib cage shattering, finger do far better. but as was said earlier it's entirely up to you.might be easier to start with a pick, i actually started with my thumb, then went to the finger next to it, and incorporated the other 2 after i got comfortable. BUT, it depends on what type of bass sound you like. i eprsonally dont like twangy, trebley bass, as far as playing.

Likewise, she's a beauty, alright.  Can't wait to hear.

When I bought my bass last year (first one I'd owned) I went through the same fingers or pick dilema.  In fact I'm still very much in the middle of it.  I find fingers give more expression but pick gives more attack and presence in the mix.  Horses for courses.

Wow... I love it.
I'm jealous.
And it's definitely one I would pick for myself, were I in the market.

Hmmm....

What a beauty! I can see what attracted you to this fine instrument.

I use finger picking for most bass parts, but revert to a plectrum when a song gets really noisy or it's hard to get the bass to stand out in the mix. Horses for courses.

Hope you're having fun with her.

Quote from: facemask93 on February 26, 2012, 08:42:11 AMThanks Eric , now learning to play it , do you use a pick or fingers , at the moment i'm getting on fine with a pick , should i learn both ways

I use a large felt pick, which gives a similar sound to fingers, certainly moreso that a clucky plastic pick.  I would try to learn with your fingers, though.

Congrats.
