I once had the misfortune of a friend giving me a free ticket to see Yngvie Malmsteen in concert at Rio's in Bradford, still makes me shudder to my core thinking about the poodle rock haired fret wanker. He must have thrown 700 picks out into the audience.
He definately thought a lot about himself,.............................................I hated it.

Yes that`s why they call him a douchebag with sunglasses and rings!

I actually like some of his older stuff. His playing can work good on acoustic. But the widdly widdly is out of hand most the time. But what i can`t believe is Satch and Vai let him in on G3 once!!

Acutally I kinda enjoyed Malmsteen's performance in G3 .. he was throwing picks in the crowd , flipping his guitar around his neck , kicking his legs up etc .. it was kinda entertaining .
Vai and Satriani were much better, but still I found Malmsteen interesting ..
.
Has for my favorite solos , Pink Floyd 's Crazy Diamond, Deep Purple's Sweet Child in Time and Rock and Roll Machine by Triumph are some of my favorite ones ..
.
Have a good day !

Has noby mention'd Van Halen's "Eruption"... I think that one stands out as most memorable for me!!! I cannot count the number of times I've seen drunken patrons playin "Air Guitar" to that solo... Myself included.

Don't mean to go all A.O.R. on you folks, but "Rosanna" by Toto/Lukather and even the solo in "Two Tickets to Paradise were nice and in the pocket.  Very hummable.

Not a huge fan of Lifeson's soloing, but I thought "Limelight" was very inventive

For best, I'll always go with the Fillmore version of Jimi's "Machine Gun," but I know that this perhaps veers from the intent of this thread.  Check out "the note" at 3:56.

I definitely agree with you, Blooby. Jimi's been my favourite musician since I first heard him around 1967 or 68. And the band of Gypsys album is one of my favourites. His guitar tone on that album was different from the others and I love it. My desert island album picks would all be by Hendrix. He's the only musician I can never get tired of. Just about every time I listen to him I hear some amazing thing that I didn't notice before that just makes my jaw drop.

Yep, that note is awesome!

Speaking of "the note", check out Leslie West's "note" at the end of the guitar solo leading into Roll Over Beethoven. It starts at about 1:30 and goes till about 2:19 (49 seconds!). Yeah, I know it's just feedback, but it's not easy to hold it that long without it changing pitch or dying out. It impressed the hell out of me when I first heard it as a teenager. Maybe not so much now but it's still cool.
