Oh yes... I was aware of him as a young kid. My gran used to tell stories about Springheel Jack. I'm quite interested in these kind of urban legends generally, but old Springheel has inspired several pieces of art and music for me already.

I even did a song about him a couple of years ago but never posted it on here or soundclick (it was pretty weird...!). I'll try and dig it out.

Got a feeling there may already be a band of this name...?

I just had a quick look at the Wikipedia page for Spring-heeled Jack. He looks like a Victorian era Batman. I wonder if Spring-heeled Jack inspired Bob Kane and Bill Finger to create Batman?

When I was about 10 years old, I remember a mate of mine had a book chock full o' spooky stuff, all based on true myth type of shit. We used to scare ourselves stupid reading all the mad stuff in there. Springheel Jack was one of the 'characters' in the book. All sorts of weird stuff, but I don't recall anything like what 64 dug up. That particular Springheeled Jack does have a look of Batman to him...

And yea, there have been about 6000000000 bands called Springheel(ed) Jack. I do believe a certain 'Supergrass' were called this in their very early days...

My dad used to talk of 'Spring Heeled Jack', there is some clouding of some legends, confusing Spring Heel and Jack the Ripper.
Some suggest that it was a member of the then royal family. More research needed I think.

i dont believe springheel jack ever killed anyone. and was before the late 1800's which was jack the rippers time. it is said he could leap higher than 10 feet whic is why the artist depicts the cape, as like flying. he was said to wear a cloak or cape, but i dont think it was described as "wings" looking. just the artists interpretations. he was supposed to look kind of demonly in the face as i recall, but its been along time since i read about him
