i think a new version, update of a song should have a seperate topic, it just seems to get buried as an old topic, ah well.

Actually, no.  In most cases, the original post at the top of the topic should be edited to replace the old attachment with the new one. If there's some reason for wanting both versions, then the new version should be added to the same topic, as has been done here. The original post at the top of the topic can then be edited and a link added to the second version, if desired. Or you can add [singlemp3][/singlemp3] tags to the original post with the URL of the second version's attachment. This will add the MP3 player to the original post so that both versions can be played directly from it (though the original version will always appear last).

We don't want to have multiple topics for the same song. It's too confusing and results in a lot of "what happened to my comment?" replies, where people think their comment disappeared but, in fact, they commented in a different topic containing another version of the song. So it's usually best to keep all versions of a song in the same topic.

Great addition Frank !! Live drums does really make a difference!!

I hear you about new versions beeing buried. But one reason for that is that it's easy to think "I've commented on that already". What you can do to help it a bit, is to change the subject when posting the new version (like I did now).

Oh well ........

phantasm777

thanks, i di not know anyone could change a topic, i assumed only the starter of the topic could do so.

phantasm777

ahhh but it changes nothing in the main area, so everyone would assume it was the same song they already posted in

The "Recent Posts" block on the front page only shows the subject of the topic's original post which can only be changed by the original poster or an admin. So changes to the subject of individual messages won't show up there. However, the Recent Posts page shows the subjects from the individual messages which will reflect any changes you make to the subject of your own posts:

You can simply ask the originator of the topic (who is, afterall, the person you're collaborating with) to change the subject of his post if you want to flag it as a New Version.

But whether the subject of the original post is changed or not, your post will still appear as an unread message to everyone (until they view it), and it will appear in the Latest Songs jukebox. So it's really not treated any differently than a new topic. Some members might ignore it thinking they've already heard it and commented, but I think most members will see it in their unread messages and at least have a look, if not a listen. A lot of members are pressed for time and might not want to comment on a song that they've already commented on, even if they realize that it's been updated. There are a few songs on the site that have half-a-dozen versions. Who's got time to listen to every version and comment on each one? Not many, I'm afraid.

Unless there's a good reason for keeping both versions, I think the best thing is for the original poster to replace the old attachment in his post with the new version and change the subject to show that it's a new version. Then it's really no different from a new topic except that it already has some comments. I prefer this approach to keeping several versions because it simplifies the jukeboxes. Quite often, the Latest Songs or On This Day jukeboxes will contain several versions of the same song. I find that a bit annoying. The same goes for the member jukeboxes. If you keep posting revisions of your songs and not removing the earlier versions, all of the different versions end up in your jukebox, which is confusing and annoying for anyone who wants to listen to your songs.
