"Strange Fruit" Hook covers Billie Holiday

#4 for protestfest, I didn't think this fest would inspire me so much. Warning, this is very dark and upsetting subject matter! This song was was a poem written in the 1930's by a Jewish teacher named Abel Meeropol, it's about his disgust at a picture he saw of the lynchings of 2 black men. Billie Holiday recorded it in 1939. Can you imagine her fighting for the time to record this or her singing it in front of the mostly white audiences she was singing to, she ended most of her shows with this song apparently. It's been called the 1st protest song and seems to me that it's a pretty important song!

there was a show on bbc4 recently about the blues i think "the blues at the beeb" or something, and there was some footage of billy holliday doing this, it was stunning. and i must say this is a fabulous renditition of a great song.
