I know it's a damn stupid answer, but it was in order to let the people onboard admire "better" the little villages of the Isola del Giglio in the evening...  :(

...or...even more absurd, it seems that it was done to pleasure a member of the crew coming from that island, who wanted to "salute" his people... :-[ :-\ >:(

This kind of things has been rather frequent on cruise ships until now. Surely it will not be anymore allowed, after this tragedy.
