I know it's a damn stupid answer, but it was in order to let the people onboard admire "better" the little villages of the Isola del Giglio in the evening...  

...or...even more absurd, it seems that it was done to pleasure a member of the crew coming from that island, who wanted to "salute" his people...

This kind of things has been rather frequent on cruise ships until now. Surely it will not be anymore allowed, after this tragedy.
