Here is my latest song.

Recorded on the MBR

I used my Strat for the rhthym (using the chorus effect) and for the lead (using the Blues driver effect) and my acoustic for the bass part (through the bass crunch effect).

I recorded the vocals using a new external mic that I purchased a couple of weeks ago.  It is a Shure PG 58 - budget model - but I really like it.  I discovered that it works better with a woolly sock over it because that eliminates most of the pops.

Obviously, the drums are the MBR onboard drums - I used the blues 1 drums.

In case you are wondering, the song is written from a woman's perspective (maybe someone like my wife) as if she is talking to a man (maybe someone like me).  Don't worry, it is tongue in cheek.

You give me no sympathy
words and music by Ian Robertson

Verse 1

You give me no sympathy
You don't even care

When I need to hold your hand
You're not even there

You're a selfish old bastard
And you're arrogant
And sometimes you're just rude

You give me no sympathy
You better change your attitude

Verse 2

You give me no sympathy
You're just so unaware

When I need you to take my side
You're so Laissez-faire

You're a puffed up windbag
And a social recluse
And always in a bad mood

You give me no sympathy
You better change your attitude

Verse 3

You give me no sympathy
You've totally lost your flare

When I need to vent my spleen
You just sit and stare

You're a bubble headed booby
You forget my name
You think I'm just a source of food

You give me no sympathy
You better change your attitude

Verse 4

You give me no sympathy
It's more than I can bear

When I need to see my mum
You just grumble and swear

You're a tired old fart
And you're past your prime
But you think you still look good in the nude

You give me no sympathy
You better change your attitude

Well done Ian. Good lyrics and well sung.

I assume you don't have a bass. Have you ever tried dropping your bass track an octave in Audacity? It works quite well and produces a pretty realistic sounding bass track. See this message.

Sounds like a nice person to know.

Great song and well played and recorded. Brilliant. And the Shure mic sounds good and clean.

lyrically this is excellent. I've never been a guy that listens to lyrics, I find them to be a necessary evil in order to get comments on a song. This is completely the exception to my rule. I was hooked instantaneously on the opening line, and it's caused repeat listens. The vocals are fantastic, and the PG-58 really did a fine job. I have one that I don't use much, but now I might start trying it again.

The music has a great hook to it. You reeled in a big fish with this post, because I'm hooked.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm very happy to have bought the Shure microphone.  For some reason, I thought the MBR only worked with a condensor mic but when I read the manual again I found that I had been confused because there were so many instructions for the use of condendor mics that I had missed the fact that dynamic mics were actually fine.  I realise there are different applications for the different mics but it seems that I can capture vocals fairly well with the external dynamic mic and i don't get all the noise from operating the MBR.  However, I've found that I have to turn up the sensitivity a lot and this then brings in background noise a bit.  But I will experiment and find the right way to record with it.

Anyway, Thanks for the words above.

Speaking of words, I'm glad some of you have mentioned liking the lyrics to this tune.  I like to be a bit humourous when writing songs.  It help relieve the tension of a stressful and tiring life.

cheers,

Ian
