Fresh festival submission! And this one is mine to the first comment!

I thought I didn't know this song until I heard it. I didn't know this was from 1975! I thought it was from mid 80s.
How cool is that?

Really like what you do with the 2 vocals. The piano bridge is great. Is there a flanger on the guitar? or is it on the bass? Anyway it sounds great. I really like your take on your covers.

I really prefer your stripped down version to the original. Never liked the original much, and only in recent years did I appreciate the bizarre, tedious, and innovative way they achieved the zillion vocal layers. But what about the song? Yes, there's a good song under all those layers, and you found it.

The piano with the delay is really beautiful – almost lounge-y. Your soft lead vocal – almost spoken – is so much better for the lyrics of this song than the original. The original vocal is good, but your vocal performance is convincing.

Thanks both. My approach to covers is to strip it down to the wood, throw away all the decorations and stylings, degrease everything then rebuild it using just the lyrics, chords and melodies. Then I can dress it up as I want.

This song is iconic, but is also one of the most grossly overproduced songs. My version is
One guitar track (Squier Jazzmaster)
Bass (Squier Jaguar bass)
Drums and piano (from GarageBand)
Three vocal tracks (all of which I first did in a normal voice, didn't like, then redid in the softer voice).
Overdrive - Distortion - Hyperactivity

Nice version Nick, enjoyed hearing a stripped down version, you've done a great job !

Been struggling to find 1975 songs I'd like to do as the ones I really like I've already done in previous fests but I was actually having a try at this earlier this week but gave up on it. Any suggestions would be welcome ;)

I disagree with the "overproduction" aspect of the original.  For a person like me that "overproduction" gave me what I still think of as one of the greatest pop songs of all time.  I thought it was brilliant and still do.  "Be quiet, big boys don't cry"... I also realize lots of people don't think like me and I am ok with that.
btw... I previously wrote a comment on my phone but apparently didn't press the right buttons.

so to be honest I was skeptical when I pressed play here.  You did an amazing job on this.  I do like Ted's analysis though... about the 10CC and Queen.
Your piano on this is so wonderful to the rest of it.
I would say you absolutely nailed this cover Nick.

Can I talk about this song some more?  It seems like the man is lying, that in fact he is in love and that the picture does mean the world to him... the problem isn't her, it's him... and because of that he likely ended up alone for good... but hey.. this song did what it was supposed to do... got me hooked.  I still am... I heard your version 10 times already!

There's / was a plugin with that sound. It was free. I downloaded it, but deleted it because it took too much space on the hard-drive and was a bit boring...

I didn't really know what to expect here. I mean OHD has been hitting the songs out from the courtyard, but the song is a bit boring ain't it?

I don't know if it was intentional, or not. But i thought of ODH singing this with a slight hangover while brushing his teeth and it made it way better.

Not that the performance was bad, but i needed a strong visual image. I'm sometimes like that. My bad.

It floats. I mean it's a keeper!

This version certainly isn't! I think i got sidetracked with the longwinded procedure it took to make the original. I've listened to these podcasts, interviews etc. and i remember being bored of one such thing. And i think that leaked into my appreciation of this song... The original version.

ODH is in a class of his own. He makes them, i listen. I'm simple like that!
