I'm struggling not read that as just "covers of songs". I don't have a particular band or genre that I play when driving, I like to listen to any and all music, depending on how the mood takes me.

I agree. This festival was suggested by Flash Harry and I don't want to change the rules of his suggestion. But maybe he'll have a think about it and refine his rules so that the fest doesn't amount to covers of any song ever written.

I think I understand his intention regarding "songs you listen to whilst driving". There are lots of compilation albums and online playlists that feature "driving songs".

For example: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=driving+songs&ia=web

But aside from referring to one of those lists, it's hard to define what makes a "driving song". I'm like you. I listen to all sorts of different kinds of music in the car. I wouldn't really classify any of it as "driving songs". I'm just as likely to listen to the same music in my living room or on the computer. Perhaps "songs you listen to whilst driving" should be "songs you only listen to whilst driving". But do any of us really have any songs that we only listen to while driving? It seems unlikely.

Awfully sorry, I was taking part in a European Banger Rally Challenge, which came to a sudden stop when my car broke.

Difficult to define a driving song, it seemed obvious as I was hammering down an Alpine pass in my 21 year old mini, (Got my motor running...)

I would say any song with a driving beat that wants you to break all speed limits...

Born to be wii-i-i-ild  ("Get yer motor runnin'  Head out on the highway"). Now that's a driving song!

Other good driving songs:

"I'm in Love with My Car" by Queen

"Highway Star" by Deep Purple

"Radar Love" by Golden Earring

"Bad Motor Scooter" by Montrose

"Autobahn" by Kraftwerk

Surf classics like "Dead Man's Curve" by Jan & Dean (though I prefer Nash the Slash's 1980 cover)

And, thanks to the "Wayne's World" movie, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen

Here's a suggestion. Make it a cover of any song but with a prize  for the most contrived justification of why it meets the criteria.

I'll get my coat.... ;)

I always thought everyone knew what a good driving song was, but maybe I was wrong. To me they are usually uptempo 4/4, fairly simple but catchy rock songs. No jazz, pop, punk, reggae or anything else. A lot or maybe all would qualify as Dad rock?

That's some awesome context.

As a side note, if it's a 21 year old Mini, it's probably an R50.  At the time that was made I was Project Manager for the harman/kardon premium audio system for the R50 and spending a lot of time up at BMW Oxford. Happy days.

I drive a 2020 Cooper S now.

I have few good "stop driving songs" – songs that I heard on the radio while driving, and they made me want to divert to the nearest record store immediately to buy the album.
