A complicated genesis for this song
..which is not a traditional song, contrary to what is often believed
It was first recorded in 1957 by Francis McPeake
While Francis McPeake owns the copyright to the song, it is widely believed that instead of writing the song, he arranged an existing traveling folk version and popularized the song as his father's. When interviewed on the radio, Francis McPeake said that it was based on a song he heard on a trip to Scotland, and that he later rewrote it. Bob Dylan's recording of the song cited it as traditional, with the arranger unknown, although Dylan's copyright records indicate that the song is sometimes "attributed to" McPeake.

I didn't know this song but I heard a version on weissenborn guitar by Troy Brenningmeyer
I decided to do it first in instrumental version (weissenborn guitar and low wisthle, and strings with synth)

..and then I discovered the sung version which has been recorded by many singers and in particular by a great bluegrass band "the petersen family".

..then after the instrumental part I added a sung version with guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and dobro

Taken a bit of a break from Songscrafter's for a while. Sometimes you need a bit of a break. It was a lovely day for a walk on a warm spring day, so grabbed a pair of cans and listened to the latest submissions. The quality is fantastic and all great listens.

This is pure magic - what a sound! Loved it.

Quotewhat a sound!

it's normal my guitar wWissenborn is..made in England :D , in Christchurch ...it can't be very far from you?

...and I just learned with stupefaction by the website that this artisanal manufacturer had definitively closed!
It's really sad, they were making Lap steel guitars, especially Weissenborn which are very good and not too expensive

Greeny (No longer active)

This is absolutely gorgeous. The depth and timbre of the Dobro at the start is really evocative and emotional. Great job with the vocals too.

I was recently on holiday down there on the Dorset coast. Christchurch is on the South Coast of England between Bournemouth and Weymouth.

QuoteThe depth and timbre of the Dobro at the start

the guitar at the beginning is not the Dobro but the Weissenborn (actually built by Anderwood in Crhistchurch

But at the end of the song, after the singing part, it is the Dobro :)

Weissenborn and Dobro are two lap steel type instruments ; the Weissenborn is a Hawaiian instrument entirely made of wood and the neck is...hollow, like the resonance box which, with the low tuning in D open explains the depth of the bass

On the other hand, the Dobro, an American instrument, is made of wood or entirely of metal and what makes the typical sound is a resonator (made of metal) under the bridge, invented in the 30s by the company
Dobro's goal, at the time when there was no amplification, was to give more sound power to the guitar

That's a beautiful rendition of a song I have heard before. Fantastic playing and a lovely vocal performance.

Tu es sûr que tu n'es pas un peu écossais ?

Funnily enough, I used to work in Christchurch - know it well, and the castle pub there :-) I will look the builder up. Its not that far for us now, about an hour's drive. I always enjoy a trip down to dorset and christchurch. I looked them up, and they were operating very close to where I used to work.
