Happy Søttende Mai, to Geir, Siri, Sundbo, and any other Norwegian members or visitors we might have.

Let's celebrate with videos of Norwegian musicians.

Check out this Norwegian guitarist, Fredrik Strand Halland, who was only 12 years old in this video:

The only Norwegian band whose albums I've bought. I have their first two albums, "Hunting High and Low" and "Scoundrel Days".
Very "eighties" but I like it.  8)

I love their cover of Carole King and Howard Greenfield's "Crying in the Rain" (made famous by The Everly Brothers).

Well, my vote goes for (besides our residente norwegians, off course):

jan garbarek, the soul behind Keith Jarret's European Quartet (somewhere in the seventies)

Note: one of my favourite double bass solos at 2:11 - the man is Palle Danielson, amazing musician, but (sorry) swedish!

and from an album I'm glad to own, experimental JG + a choir singing XV/ XVIth century poliphony:

Oh! and off course our good old friend Grieg!

I have somewhere a CD my uncle brought me from Norway, with an old man that plays traditional fiddle. Strange name, I can't remember ;-)

Gonna look for it.

My vote goes to Agnes Buen Garnas:

I love this "Rosensfole" (1989) album with Jan Garbarek

And I agree with dasilvasings, Jan garbarek is absolutely a great musician:

Geir

As I was saving my 6000th post I couldn't comment on this on the 17th as I should have.

"Syttende mai" (or "Søttende mai" which is a more common pronounciation) is a special event in Norway. Norway is a young nation, we got our independence only 106 years ago after centuries of Danish and Sweedish occupation.  The independence came peacefully tho', unlike most other states. And since the end of WW2 also happened in May (8th in Norway) the celebaration of the constitution day has been quite a happening in Norway after the war.

Many women, (and an increasing number of men) wear the national costume, the "bunad", and all kids from the primary schools participate in the parades, along with school marching bands in the morning, and in the afternoon there's "citizen parades" where sport clubs, scouts, "Norwegian People's Aid" and other non-governmental organizations, marching bands, folk dance groups and the "Russ" (this year including aca !!) are the partisipants. I would think that most Norwegians are out in the streets during the day either to be in the parade or as cheering spectators.

64G, I was actually thinking of doing an Aha song for the localfest, but as it would be borderline for the topic as they where quite famous and I never got time to do it anyway, it never happened .... later one day maybe.

dss and Alfredo, yeah I love Jan Garbarek too, but I don't have any of his records. I do have a couple of his daughters records tho ...

I'd like to hear that!

I really like the song "Lifelines" (the last video I posted above). I'm not sure if I'd ever heard it before. If I did, I must have forgotten it because it sounded new to me when I found it at YouTube on Tuesday. It sounds like something that Keane or Coldplay might do. A bit different than the stuff A-ha was doing in the eighties. Anyway, I really love that song.

I guess you mean "hardingfele", it's a fiddle with 4 extra resonance strings below the ordinary strings. A great artist on this instrument is Annbjørg Lien (who also has a proggy heart, just listen to her record "Baba Yaga"):
