Hey

Here's one of mine .... a cute little mechanical device :

I remember the days before this existed...or maybe I only remember the days before I
knew it existed.
Have a capo, but never used it. Honest.
Mine currently are:
- Kaossilator
- Roland PMA-5 (see here: http://www.synthony.com/vintage/pma5.html (http://www.synthony.com/vintage/pma5.html))
- Electro-Harmonix Micro Synth
Just looking to buy the time machine that will give me the time to use them.
Cheers,
Nigel

Peterson StroboStomp tuner pedal and DI. Accuracy to 1/10th of a cent. That's ten times more accurate than Roland's new, top-of-the-line TU-1000 (+/- 1 cent accuracy) at $200, and Korg's top-of-the-line DTR2000 at $260 (also +/- 1 cent accuracy).

GripMaster from Planet Waves. Strengthens the hand and fingers while watching TV. There's a new version (http://store.daddario.com/category/152456/Vari-Grip_Hand_Fitness_Tool) available that's better because you can adjust the tension.
This is a sentimental favorite:
Roland TR-505(http://www.normbowler.com/tr505/RolandTR-505.jpg)
I haven't used it in years, but I
ruled this thing back in the day. I still have it, along with cassette tapes of saved drum arrangement data, and the trusty mono cassette player that I used to save and load the arrangements. It's part of the reason I get such a kick out of living with the limitations of the Micro BR's drums--the Micro BR is more challenging.

I've been meaning to get something like this. I'm especially interested in the "callus builder" feature of the new version--since lately I spend more time punching buttons on the Micro BR than I do fingering guitar strings.
Hey! Here's an idea for an invention: Stick-on callus builders for the buttons of electronic devices. If I had little rough bits all over the left side of my computer keyboard, and on my Micro BR buttons, I'd have calluses of steel by now.
Next stop: The patent office!

FortuneCity was somehow replacing it with their own ad. But if you right-clicked on the picture and selected "View Image", the ebow pic would open. Once opened, it would be in your browser's cache, so any subsequent views of the message would show the ebow pic from the cache instead of FortuneCity's ad.
Anyway, I found the same image from another source and replaced it. Should be okay now.

A capo opens you up to a whole new world of chords........
Some Guitarists that I have met feel Ashamed to use them.....But sound shit trying to attempt the same tones..........
It is the ultimate accessory for the guitar....!!!!!!
For me this beats any gadget for the guitar!
Anything else is a bonus!
Agreed...
But I cant find mine :(
Bloody kids.
Trying to bar the chords is a bitch!!!!!
I have made it my mission to leave the capo behind.........
I Can't do it!!!!!!
And Steve.....
My Two year old hides mine all the time.....
And bites the rubber off it until it cant be used........
£30 on capos to be invested soon....

:) Once I was jamming with some punk/metalheads, and I was on my acoustic guitar (which to them seemed quite exotic). I said, "I'm getting out the capo, fellas. Just warning you."
"Nooooo! Please! Not the capo!"
It was like holding up a crucifix to a vampire.
I remember seeing a Vid of Simon & Garfunkel years ago, where PS had a capo on about the 6th fret, and making some astonishing sounds. As soon as I was able, I too tried a Capo several frets down, oh boy, a whole new world of possibilities. Anyone who doesn't want to stretch, progress, and experiment, shouldn't really be into playing music. 8)
Capo, picks of various weights/materials/shapes. Someone mentioned the jewellfish-the other day I used the edge of a quarter, held perpendicular to the strings to get that 12 string sound.
Percussion (I will hold an egg-shaker while I play sometimes).
I get a ton of use/inspiration out of my various pedals-but the GT-8 takes the cake. I dont think there is anything I CANT do with it.
Also sometimes I will pull out the bass, which Is just plain different!
Besides my capo I always bring my bottleneck (don't use it much tho)
Well, if we're allo going to list the contents of our guitar cases: I never leave home without the good old tuning fork! (and also the Schubb capo)
I'm trying to get better at playing bass with my fingers, but felt picks have helped with my tone while I'm learning.

And of course my vocal mask allows me to sing in a muffled, throaty manner.

Davo, It's not the volume that's the problem ;)
I wear those everyday at work. If I am going to lose my hearing at least I will enjoy it. I have a capo and very seldom use it. I like the little things that involve others to play along. Tamborine, egg shakers, cowbell, train whistle, bongo drum, we even use spoons, everyone wants to be able to play along. And those sort of things let them. that is old school-
a pick is a useful gadget-i use a shubb capo as well- it's the best and longest lived one i ever had
but i'd have to say my CS1 compessor or boss turbo overdrive pedal-
very battle worn and work great
i'll go with-
probably the OD pedal would be my pick
Greeny I have the same Shubb capo, it works great.
Im a big fan of the Dunlop picks. I use the large triangle ones in medium for the acoustic, they are bright and allow you to really hit those strings hard.
On electrics I use the standard size in heavy guages-they last forever.

Same here, I use the .73mm tortex picks. This I can make sound both floppy and hard depending how I hold it. Also it doesn't slip from my sweaty hands... I can never use smooth picks.
I got my VARIGRIP yesterday, and have been compulsively squeezing it in its callous builder configuration.

I have one of these--but not the "for musicians" model. How is it different from the ordinary models?
Ted, its the same powerball, just describing that it is good for musicians. To work out your hand and wrists , get it going then get it as slow as u can, but grip like hell, but controlled speed, slow and easy , slow and easy, but keep the grip on hard. It works but u gotta do it regularly. If u r right handed, use it more with your left hand, it really does help to strengthen your hand. Grip it real tight.

Great minds... :)
I got one on Wednesday. I like it better than the older style GripMaster. The Vari-Grip seems sturdier (not as much wobble) and I like the callous builder. Although, I wish the spring tension could be reduced a bit more. It's a bit hard to press those finger pads down with my weak fingers - especially the pinky. Perhaps after I've used it regularly for a while my fingers will get stronger and it won't seem as difficult to press the pads.

Not that big a deal or anything... But how is an effect anything not a gadget? Traditionally, you plug a guitar into an amp and there you go. Adding anything to that could be considered a gadget. Especially when that "gadget" affects the sounds you are able to get.
I mean if a pick can be considered a "gadget" then surely a multi-effects pedal can. ;D

I looked at several definitions of gadget on the intee-net. The common key words were:
Mechanical or Electronic
Small
Technological/Innovative
Novelty (Occasionally mentioned, but hell, life is a novelty!) ;D
I was hoping to find the words unnecessary, unimportant or trivial, but no dice. According to Wikipedia (Which isn't entirely reliable - I correct spelling and content errors occasionally), a clock, bicycle or television would be considered an example of a gadget.
It appears that any musical device aside from a pick, tone block, drumstick, etc. could be considered a gadget. I don't agree, but that's what I'm gathering from the smart people of the world... :P
And then there's a gizmo...

Maybe I should retract - I don't want the forum gods to be displeased (I'm only kidding!!!)
I was on my way to buy a Kaosillator when I found this. I'd heard Nigel's fantastic rendition of Debussy posted up here and thought 'That's for me'. I rang the shop and put one on hold and went to get it. One street from the music shop was a pawn shop. If GAS is a problem, pawn shops are a side effect. I saw the Roland PMA-5, had a play (thankfully they had the manual) and was sold. It doesn't have the fluid pad of the Kaosillator. The screen is broken up like a keyboard. But it does have 8 recordable tracks (4 melody and 4 rhythm), 306 instrument sounds, 16 drum kits, 600 rhythm presets (with a limited amount of editing available), 8 types of reverb, 8 types of chorus. I'm sure it has more. It also has midi.
I either use it as a sound module by connecting a keyboard and using that as a midi controller or as a place to develop drum tracks or as something to fool around with when I get home from the pub. I don't use anywhere near its capacity. Best toy I ever bought, apart from a Winchester repeating rifle that I got when I was six.
Sounds Cool!!!
Will Have to Look it up!

Durty Boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yup it's pretty dirty Geez you guys and here I backed out of saying what I thought about building guitars in the other thread. I thought a schnauzer would be nice and you guys would like a cat. To H**** a pussy guitar there I said it. LOL I hate to tell you this. Envision playing this guitar If you were me it would interfere with my boob. LOL But then you Oski likes boobs. LOL
Is it just that I'm heterosexual, or is that really gross?
I think I'd feel differently it if I knew it was used in a totally ironic context.
For example, I think
this is kind of funny, but it's also not all red and hairy like the one above:

BTW: Wiley, you responded while I was writing this. I considered asking your opinion specifically, and then chickened out.
Well thats an interesting guitar, legs and all. LOL I could see the guys liking it. Myself I think I will stick to the basics.

As soon as I was able, I too tried a Capo several frets down, oh boy, a whole new world of possibilities. Anyone who doesn't want to stretch, progress, and experiment, shouldn't really be into playing music. 8)
Agree!!!
i'm getting my capo NOW!!
;D

I saw that same S&G video and it blew me away!
Not that my playing is anything special on this song, but my latest one uses the capo on the 4th fret ...

Before I got the e-bow, I always thought they were screaming feedback or synth lines.
Controlling the beast is another matter altogether... ;)
What the shit is an e-bow, cuthbert???
Quote from: launched on August 29, 2009, 03:46:47 PMI love percussion. Sleigh bells are my fave, but they are so expensive I haven't picked any up yet. I had an egg shaker once, but a friend ruined it because he thought there was candy inside
Huh? Was your friend's name Rain Man, by any chance?

Bosko, you sound a bit like my old pal Hank Chinaski there! :D
E-bow is brandspeak for 'electronic/energy bow'. Basically, it's an electro-magnetic device you hold with your strum hand that causes a steel string to vibrate so fast that it sounds like a continuous bowing sound. There are lots of harmonics generated from this vibration as well. And as you move it closer to a pickup, the bowed sound volume dramatically increases.
And it's very easy to get out-of-control feedback with an e-bow...

This e-bow thing sounds kind of cool. Do you have any recordings to share in which you have used it? How about any known existing recordings that use this?

There's lots of info on the EBow home page, including sound clips, videos, and a long list of recordings featuring the EBow.

It is an uber-mini personal amp.
You plug it in to your guitar and then plug earphones into it and your ears. You can also link an MP3 player in through its line-in.
