Quote from: Ted on January 05, 2011, 01:03:58 PMI hadn't heard about Rafferty's passing.  His version gave me chills, especially the sax hook. The absence of that hook in your version really underscores the loss.

Clarification: Your version is especially poignant because you wisely chose to omit the sax hook.

(What I originally wrote might have sounded like a criticism if you took it the wrong way.)

I think that the absolute best way to do a cover song is to totally, unmistakably make it your own while keeping the emotional spirit of the original. So I think your version is brilliant. The original was melancholy, wistful - yours is powerfully melancholy, made even more so because it's a sort of eulogy. A chillingly beautiful take on this classic.

This shouldn't work. This should all be very wrong. But it's not. It's full of love and emotion, and as a result is completely splendid. Nice one James. And a fine tribute.

there was no way in a million years i could do the sax hook, so yes i deliberately left it out, the added poignancy was an unexpected by product. and ted i knew you meant that in your 1st post.

I loved Baker Street from the moment I heard it, but maybe listened to it too much, because it was the sax hook that started to grate a bit in the end. So I personally don't think it's a negative not to put the sax in. It's the verses and the lyric that are the timeless and enduring parts for me. I used to tinker with the verse parts on piano, but wasn't sure what to replace the sax part with. I can see now that it isn't needed!
