My headphone jack is going out too. I'll be doing surgery soon. I think it's a loose or broken connection to the socket. I'm sure it can use a good inside dusting while I'm at it.

(tip from a tech - if you can get the headphones to cut in and out by moving the jack around, you probably just need to resolder the jack to the circuit board or maybe just rebend the center jack connector for tighter contact)
