Winter Song - "Angels In Snow"

We've just had our first snowfall. Everything's white now. Reminded me of something I wrote as a tribute to my dad. If I ever have the song re-done, I'll have a female singer and will probably shorten the lyric. In the meantime, though, I think Billy did a lovely job with the music and vocals.

I hope you enjoy it. I'm sure many of you have similar memories.  :)

Angels in Snow

(v1)
In the dusty window of an old pawn shop
I saw something shiny that caused me to stop
An old-fashioned snow globe had caught my eye
Though it wasn't an object I'd normally buy
Suddenly memories took centre stage
And I was a child at a very young age

Chorus
My daddy beside me, at 13 below
Teaching me how to make angels in snow
We lay on our backs
Did jumping jacks
Giggling under a pale winter sky
I closed my eyes tightly, pretended to fly
With my daddy beside me, at 13 below
Watching his angel make angels in snow

(v2)
The frog pond iced over, he laced up my skates
Held my hand tightly as I tripped in his wake
He'd do a few rounds to get into his stride
Then glide to a stop while he twirled me up high
With my toes nearly frozen by the time we got home
He knelt down before me to rub my feet warm

Chorus
My daddy beside me, at 13 below
Teaching me how to make angels in snow
We lay on our backs
Did jumping jacks
Giggling under a pale winter sky
I closed my eyes tightly, pretended to fly
With my daddy beside me, at 13 below
Watching his angel make angels in snow

Bridge 1
Somber now under a pale winter sky
I close my eyes tightly, try hard not to cry
I see Dad beside me, at 13 below
Watching his angel make angels in snow

(v3)
Over the years, there seemed so much to do
I travelled afar, and even letters grew few
He called out my name when he didn't have long
But before I could reach him, my father was gone
Now all I'd wish, if I could give the command
Is my feet once again in my father's warm hands

Outro
Somber now under a pale winter sky
I close my eyes tightly, try hard not to cry
I'm smiling through tears because I see him right now
Teaching angels to make self-portraits in snow
Honour the earth. Without it, we'd be nowhere.

you are an amazing song writer. words just keep flowing so naturally, this is so awesome. The vocals work perfectly. I would add some harmonies.

You could really make $$$$ at your writing.
Why don't we do it on the road?

I wouldn't change a thing!!  Billy seemed to bring it all to life and that is what it is about!!

Wow Donna.  I just wanted to say thank you.  I lost my Dad almost a year ago, and this song touches upon a lot of thoughts that a child has about their Father.  Simply beautiful lyrics, and so well performed.  Kudos. :)

Okay to cover...not sure why you'd want to though...

A song to be treasured. I think I've heard you do cleverer, wittier pieces but I'm sure that I've not heard another song that quite touches the emotions as strongly as this one. Wonderful............Willie

Geir used the word "great" four times. I want to add one more! :)

I will listen to this wonderful song may times more. This is one of Billy's finest compositions and vocal performances, and the lyric is very appealing. I like melancholic songs, and this one is really wonderful.

Thank you all for your lovely comments.  :) I'm so pleased the song resonated strongly. That's what it's all about, eh? ;)

The song's one of my favourites. I don't play it too often, because it makes me sad. (I had a bit of a weep before posting it the other night.  :) )

I agree, Steffen. Billy did a marvellous job. Though the song was written from my (female) perspective, I think male vocals work as well. After all, "boy" children are also someone's "angel".  :)
