Jim's wonderful comedy song "I wanna play my guitar" sounded a lot like the great Public Image Limited to me, so I was inspired to try to add some Jah Wobble style bass. Jim sent me all the wav files so I remixed it to bring up the vox and added some bass, which ended up being quite simple so as not to overpower the vox. I was trying to channel Jah Wobble, and I found this great bass patch which had a touch of Bootsy Collins about it, so I tried to channel him as well. Sadly I think I ended up with Wobbly Boots, but there you go.

So here's the Grout Mask Replica Bass mix of Jim's wonderful comedy fest entry, words and original here:

Nigel, by Zeus man, what a mix here.  I am so impressed by how this sounds.  It is a full wonderful realized wonder of a song now.  I really really like this.  Thats a fab bass.  You put Jims vocals right into the mix sweet spot.  Hot damn and by Zeus!!!!!!

Damn, this is the way it should have always been. Nigel good to hear you active my friend. This mix is delicious. I've got wobbly boots now. I can actually make out the lyrics this time, which I can never make out lyrics when they swimming around from left to right. I've gotta learn that trick.

Stunning song and mix! The soundscape is just great. Yes, a clear Jah Wobble vibe on bass. Great additions!

Oh well ........

Ferryman_1957

Hey thanks all, the gods are smiling on me! I'm getting to grips with the BR 800 and I like its capabilities. I'm learning all the time and thanks to AndyR, I bought the "Guerilla Home Recording" book. One of the great things in this is a little chart showing where all the freqeuncy "sweet spots" are for different instruments. So to make Jim's vox a bit clearer I boosted the eq on the vox at 10 khz which just makes it pop out a bit (the chart worked!). I also reduced the pan width so the "swirling" was not so extreme.

It was great fun, I loved Jim's original track so was inspired to do something quick. Which is unlike me but it's nice to be active again (thanks Tony!). Now back to the Picasso album......

Cheers,

Nigel
