There is a internet project out there called the Whitburn project that
charts information about popular songs over the last 120 years . You
can look at things like what was the average song length of a chart
topper in the 40s vs the 80s (3:01 vs 3:59). There is a ton of data so you can look up lots of different things if you have the time.  One
thing that struck me as particularly interesting is that although there
are 37,000 songs that have been hits on the Billboard Chart since 1890, they only use about 9,000 unique words as their song titles.

I thought it might be a fun "challenge" to try and write a song (both lyrics and music) made up of the top 100 most popular words. I think it would be fun to see what different people come up with when they have the same source material.

Anyone up for this challenge? (I will start working on one  myself this weekend.)

Here are the top 100 words:

ain't alone angel arms around away baby bad beautiful believe blue boy change christmas comes crazy cry dance days dear dream ever everybody everything eyes fall feel fire fool forever girl gone gonna goodbye happy heart heaven hey hold kiss la lady leave life light lonely love lover mama man mind mine miss moon moonlight morning mr music night nobody oh people play please rain red remember river rock roll rose sing smile somebody something song soul star stay stop street summer sun sweet sweetheart talk tears theme things think tonight town true walk wanna wish woman wonderful world young

Just these words, (not including a, and, the, in, on, etc?) or including all these words?

Nice challenge!

Apparently all the songs have only used 12 notes too  ;D

My original thought was to write a song that simply  includes all these words, but trying to write a song that uses just these 100 words is an interesting challenge as well. Why don't we consider it extra credit if you use go for this extra level of difficulty?

ok i used only the words listed.there are no  the's or and's  or or's etc. used each word once and once only, oops accept at the end where the last 9 words are repeated like a chorus, will need to go back and cut that off..
put it over the top of the music for my song hurry murray.
was hard work, got the scissors out for this one but still have a long way to go to catch up with mr burroughs.
here it is you can tick the words of the list above as you go.

I took a swing at this challenge this weekend, but I was not able to come up with a melody. Perhaps I will be able to find sometime during this week to give it another try. Here is what I came up with for the lyrics part so far, I decided to use the 100 words without any other words at all, but allowing repeats.  I call it "moonlight morning aka 100 words".

moonlight morning
Mr. music night

goodbye sun
goodbye sun

true tears, sweet summer rain

theme song lover,  play something crazy!
stop talking, stop  thinking
fall foolishly, happily

love everything

Around wonderful people
rock roll rose, Christmas woman
Miss forever lonely, Beautiful blue eyes

moonlight  town
moonlight  world

please remember red river

young  dream, fire mind
walk moon street . .
....sweetheart, believe change!

theme song lover,  play something crazy
stop talking, stop  thinking
fall foolishly, happily
love everything

lady leave man
bad boy cry
arms feel heaven
kiss wish
kiss wish
kiss wish.....

life light mama
angel smile's tonight
soul star gone
nobody stays alone

hey girl sing heart
dance away days
oh la things
wanna hold baby

ain't ever gonna come
ain't ever gonna come

theme song lover,  play something crazy
stop talking, stop  thinking
fall foolishly, happily
love everything

dear everybody
somebody forever  mine

moonlight morning
moonlight morning
moonlight morning
moonlight morning.......

That sounds like it would lend itself to a single voice and some reflective piano.

Hmmm.
