Early recording: Koh Samui (instrumental)

This is one of my earliest recordings (I only started composing music in 2004).

To my big surprise a lot of people seem to like this song. It has not been mixed at all as I did not have any idea of what mixing is all about when I recorded this, and the whole "production" from composing to rendering had not taken more than 2 hours. That was the time when I "composed" up to five songs EVERY day. :D

I also used a lot of midi quantization then. I did not know any better ... :\

Unfortunately I also did not know that it would have been a clever idea to bounce the midi to audio tracks for archiving. I don't have the respective software/hardware synths any longer, so I cannot simply remix the song. But my plan is to do a new version of it with new sounds when my time (and motivation) allows.

There are a lot more old songs from that time that I'd like to resurrect. Unfortunately a while back I lost hundreds of my mp3 recordings, and I did not give names to my "songs" then. So I have no idea which of my many projects (more than 1000) are worth continuing with.

Oh, why the title "Koh Samui", you may ask yourself, as it does not sound very Asian. The reason is that I wrote this song as a background track for a holiday home video that my uncle had made - a sea cruise that had brought them to Koh Samui (among other places).  :)

One of my favorite albums is a collection of Bengali (Bangladesh) traditional songs set set to arrangements very similar to this. I can't imagine that you would have heard it. (I bought it at a little market in Dhaka, and it's not listed in the Rhapsody database.) Anyway, I've listened to it dozens of times. This song gave me an instant feeling of familiarity and comfort.  Thanks.

You have more than 1000 projects like that?  :o

Just projects, Halem. Nothing finished.

Thank you for listening. Dhaka? Well, then maybe it does sound a bit exotic after all ... must be the shakahachi flute. ;)

This is lovely, Steffen.  :) Has almost a meditative feel to it. In any case, very relaxing.
I love the hint of Asian.

Hard to imagine you've only been composing since 2004.  :o ;D
