Preliminary thoughts

Years ago a friend and I conceived the notion of making a band and calling it The Universe Band.  The idea was that musically the band would be open to becoming whatever it needed to be, and would tackle grandiose, universal and cosmic topics.

The amazing results on the Picasso album currently in the works reminded me of this, and inspired me to rekindle this dream that I previously considered to be too ambitious.  I met with my friend and asked his permission to use the name, and he gave me permission.

I want to write another concept album and enlist some folks to collaborate / contribute towards bringing it alive, riding the momentum of the Picasso album currently in the works, and using essentially the same model.

The Band

The Universe Band is a band more in the sense of a group of people united for a common purpose, like Robin Hood and the Merry Men, or the Mission:  Impossible crew, each contributing their abilities to accomplish something greater than the sum of it's parts.

I want to use this name because the topics are too big for my name or any individual.

The Concept

This is very early, as I just started thinking about it today, but I wanted to share it since that method worked so well in the Picasso thread.

I have 2 ideas:

(1)  An album about the 20th century.  Each song would represent a different school of thought indigenous to the 20th century, and the social ecosystems that produced them.  The underlying message would be that the world is too big for any single school of thought.

(2)  Something about genetics, and how humanity is a family living in a divided home, and we are gradually making peace with estranged members, and by intermingling and procreating across political, ethnic, linguistic and economic borders, we are restoring our genes to the strength and complexity of the original humans who had it in their DNA to produce all the colours we see, thus living our potential.

This may sound far-out, but the ideas would lyrically be expressed less explicitly.  These two concepts could perhaps be merged, or be completely altered.

Like I said, it's preliminary as I have yet to write a single line.  I was surprised at how quickly the Picasso album wrote itself and can't be certain how long this will take.

Trilogy

I also toyed with the idea of making a trilogy of rock operas as The Universe Band, where the Picasso album "Suffering Machines" would serve as the first in the trilogy.  However I would like to know how the current participants feel about that.

I love your ideas Fuzz, the way your mind works, and I love making songs.  Anything that inspires me to make songs is alight by me.  I am up for whatever you have in mind, sign me up as one of the participants in this mad endeavor of yours.  You need a song, you need music, you need lyrics, you need a half-cracked singer, you need a monster guitar solo, I am there.

One thing I love about this medium is that it's open to any style from one song to the next.

Send it to me and I'll give it a listen.

At this stage I want to create the concept for the collection of songs... conceiving them all at the same time (like we did with the Picasso album).

So I am looking more for an outline to work off of, than an individual song.

But do send it along... it may inspire something!
