I was just listening to a song I collabed on a while ago with Rusty Blake.
Thought some of you might enjoy it as well.  :)
I simply love Rusty's simple, poignant delivery.

The Dreeman Tree

(v1)
Me and Johnny Dreeman
Was childhood friends
With Larry 'n Harry
The Lawson twins
We'd all sit together
Like peas in a pod
By the big old tree
In Johnny's front yard

Chorus
Harry 'n Larry
'n Johnny 'n me
Plannin' out things
How we'd like 'em to be
We felt wild and free
'N we done a lotta laughin'
By the Dreeman tree

(v2)
That big old tree
Was our meetin' place
And we'd shimmy up high
To where we'd made a space
'N Johnny laughed below
Kept an eye out for girls
We didn't want 'em 'round
With their gigglin' 'n curls

Chorus
Harry 'n Larry
'n Johnny 'n me
Plannin' out things
How we'd like 'em to be
We felt wild and free
'N we done a lotta hopin'
By the Dreeman tree

(v3)
In fall the leaves
Turned orange and red
We'd rake up a pile
'N dive in straight ahead
Johnny he'd laugh
Throw some leaves around
At Larry 'n Harry 'n me
Tusslin' on the ground

Bridge
Life's forever when you're just a kid
Then death kicks in, overturns all ya did
Sometimes Larry 'n Harry 'n me
Take a drive past Johnny's kinda quietly
His wheelchair's gone, but I swear I can see
Him laughin' in the branches
Of the Dreeman tree

Chorus
Harry 'n Larry
'n Johnny 'n me
Plannin' out things
How we'd like 'em to be
We felt wild and free
'N we done a lotta dreamin'
By the Dreeman tree

Love it! The play on words "dreeman tree" is brilliant. His delivery reminds me of James Taylor. This is exceptional songwriting.

PS: Did you really know twins named Harry and Larry? I knew twins named Huey and Louis.  ;)

Great song....one of the best I've heard in this style.  Great lyrics pulls the whole story together so nicely.  Delivery and arrangement of the song is perfect......nice use of the strings back-up to the finger picked acoustic (this song and style "strikes a chord" with me :)    Keep sharing Donna, this is great.
"Play because you love it. Don't worry about if it will ever make any money, just understand that playing is an end in itself, and you play music, it will make your life better. And, don't worry about being a star, don't worry about making money, worry about nothing, just sit down with your guitar and let it speak to you and that will make your life better. It will bring beauty into your life. It's a great thing to do."     ---- David Crosby

This is a prime example of something that I wouldn't actively pursue for a listen, but it's right here in front of me, and I'm the better for it. Lyrical brilliance. The acoustic guitar, vocals, and then the strings coming in were fantastic.

I really enjoyed this Donna, thanks for posting it.

This is one of my favorite songs of yours, Donna!

Great lyric, as usual, and simply wonderful songwriting and performance. Don McLean could have sung this.

Thank you all for listening - I know it's not everyone's cup of tea  ;) - and for your kind comments.
The song is special to me, and I'm glad you liked it.

Gritter, no, I never knew a Harry or a Larry.  ;)  But the lyric is loosely a kind of tribute to a couple of sweet kids I knew in primary school. One was diabetic, the other was in a wheelchair. Both boys died very young. I kind of wrapped them both up in the character of Johnny.
