Track I have been working on, recorded on Sonar with some new drum mics to try out (cheap CAD set, but an improvement none the less). Had some problems with the digital connection of my sound card and the right channel kept making clicks so I had to mute one overhead and move the left overhead to the center, then problems with the pc shutting down whenever too many tracks or plug ins were open, so I ended up making a submix of drums and acoustic guitars to a stereo wav, importing that to add electrics, same thing to add bass and synths etc. - hopefully some eq adjustments will get rid of the mud in the low end and give e room to bring the electric guitars up a bit... though for now I am waiting on a line6 UX8 interface I ordered so I can just use my laptop and bypass all the above mentioned problems and have 8 individual tracks to record the drums as apposed to the 3 I had to use for this. - Thanks for listening.

EPIC prog rock. Really great recording...the music really tells the whole story. I Love the drumming and everything else sounds so cool. This is a killer track, played with expertise! Sounds mixed to my ears. Stellar work here!

Wow
This is an outstanding piece.
A complicated but masterful mix and killer musicianship.
A very creative sound scape.

Well done

This is great, Scorpios! All it needs is for Geddy Lee to add a vocal track.

One Thing i never did was play more than drums or percussion. This is fabulous work. Very moving.
31 drum tracks?

Thanks for the feedback, whenever I get my interface I actually want to redo the drums, add vox and attempt to mix it better.

Drumbum, haha far from 31 drum tracks, I had a snare, kick and 3 tom drums going to a mixer that I panned into a stereo track on the analog in of my soundcard. I had 2 overhead condensers going to another preamp to the stereo spdif of my soundcard, so a total of 4 tracks, but ended up having to mute the right overhead condesnor mic due to some problems with the soundcard, so basically 3 tracks with 7 mics.

Not sure what is wrong with the soundcard its an audiophile m-audio 24/96 and lately the digital lock keeps going out of lock every so often making a click on the recording, fortunately now only on the right channel. I am starting to think I need to replace the breakout cable or maybe it's the spdif cables I have, it's just a hassle to order the cable from the company overseas and of course I cant find it anywhere else for sale, especially since I am not certain that is the problem.

64guitars, thanks for the links, I actually checked them out a while back when the problems first started and I am pretty sure it's most likely a problem with the breakout cable of the sound card (I remember finding a forum with someone mentioning the same problem and replacing the breakout cable solved it), or just the s/pdif cables I am using which I admit I pinched pennies on. I will probably first just try another spdif cable, and if the problem still exists, get a new breakout cable... I will just be a little aggravated to go through that and find the problem still existing and since I ordered the Line6 interface, it's no immediate rush. - It would be great if I can use the sound card with the line6 interface and have an extra 4 channels and the midi I/O that isnt on the line6 interface, though I have a gut feeling that that will just cause a bunch of issues with drivers and hardware conflict.

I have 9 mics into a mixer with 2 inputs into a tascam. As you know you have to treek each one as you go in this set-up. Then work the mix, go back to the mixer , a little less of this, more of that. I have yet to go thru the pc curve for a program for this, thats why i go this route. You have a great ear and sence of music. Also an in depth understanding of recording. First I have heard of your stuff and I like it alot. Hope to hear more.

Drumbum, thanks. Yeah it's a lot of work to get the sound you want that way, I suppose I could have made things easier and set up the mixer next to the drum set so I didn't have to go back and forth each time to adjust one mic channel etc. I have actually gotten decent results with just a pair of condenser mics at an XY configuration, but all the time I have been wanting to get each drum on it's own channel to get some hands on training with EQ and compression in that dept. I find the most difficult thing about recording drums to 2 tracks like that is anticipating how the sound should be  before all the other instruments are tracked and getting into the frequency range of things.

I also have to admit, my drum set is some 150 euro special I picked up at a supermarket, with an upgraded snare and poorly upgraded cymbals. I had an excellent drummer I work with attempt to tune it, and get a good laugh when he saw it... second hand old skins, etc... Though I have to admit he made it sound ok for what it is.

One thing I did find helpful though, is getting to hear some good studio recordings where I could just hear the actual drum sound unprocessed with all the other instruments muted. I wish material from pro end recordings where made more readily available of this type of thing (for guitar, bass, etc for that matter), in a lot of cases from what I heard the drums stripped down like that in a mix are a lot different than a sound I would have typically gone for without hearing the other instruments to fill in their parts of the spectrum. In some cases the drums actually sounded like crap when they were solo-ed without the guitars and bass but really did the job well in the entire mix.

I have to say though, that's one of my reasons towards my addiction to recording, there is always something to learn by trial and error and really no rules set in stone.

Anyway, it's cool to see a drummer on here, as they don't seem to be so common. I will try to check out your posts, my internet is slooow so listening to tracks here is a hassle but I just noticed there is an option to download them.
