As this is my 500th post I thought that I should submit a piece of music. I haven't had a lot of time recently so I haven't got any new solo pieces any where near completion  As a result, I thought I would amuse myself with a quick "Trad" cover - "Rolling Down to Old Maui."

It's a whaling song rather than a pirate song, but as it feels a bit nautical you might let me get away with it.  I'm not so sure that you will let me get away with the hornpipe bit but.....feel free to abuse me.

Nice post, how did you do the "instruments" especially that horn-pipe, is that guitar synth?

Sure. I think sea shanties and whaling songs are close enough to the pirate theme to be included. Although, I think this would have been a better fit if it had the vocals. If anyone wants to try it, the lyrics are here and there are several versions of the song on YouTube.

But this is a great recording as it is, and very well played. I too would be interested to know how you created the sounds. Keyboard? Standard patches or custom? Soft synths?

Glad you like my little bit of fun.  It was all played on keyboards - mainly a Yamaha XS7 but a few of the string sounds - including the scratchy violin - were played on my Roland Fantom.  I've tweaked quite a lot of the patches although the samples in the Yamaha are pretty awesome as standard.  I had to do a bit of work on the accordian to make it sound a bit more "folky."  I midi synch the keyboards to my BR1600 which is where I set up the tempo map in this piece.  I usually use the BR as the master with the keyboards as slaves.

I had intended going into a Jethro Tull-esque ending with drums and guitars but I decided to cut it a bit shorter for now.  I might get round to doing the full folk-rock version one day.

You are right 64, a vocal version would be better but I really can't sing.  I can only hit about 4 notes and none of them are in this song!   ;)

I have got a GR20 guitar synth and I'll see if I can find something played with it.

If you swim against the tide long enough, it turns and becomes momentum.........
