Hi chaps just a question for you all , i have a family member who has garageband on his Apple computer , we are looking at ways in which we can collab together here is my question , i have a new br 800 and he wishes to add some bass recordings on my compositions , is it possible to give him say the drum beat and a rough chord structure , for him to record in his own time but just pass me the bass track back so i then can import it over to my br800 , is this done using the wave converter software for apple ??? sounds like it gets a bit messy is there another simpler way of doing this ,, i have been putting a drum and guitar track down and handing the br800 over for a day or so to do the recording , he has garageband which looks like a great package but a little confusing at first look .

Hi Dunny,

Sure, you send him a mixdown stereo .wav file from the BR-800, and he should be able to import that into GarageBand. Then have him send you back a .wav file of just his bass track, which you can import into the BR-800.

You don't want him to send you his new mix with the bass already in it. Instead, you want him to send you just his bass track. Then you can import that to an empty track on the BR and mix it with your other tracks. For example:

You record:

  Track 1v1: Guitar
  Track 2v1: Lead vocal
  Track 3v1: Harmony vocal

Now you mix this to Tr78v8 and export that pair of tracks to a stereo WAV file using BR Wave Converter. You send this WAV file to your friend via SkyDrive or some other file hosting service that lets you upload large files (a WAV file will typically be around 40MB - too big for email).

Your friend downloads the WAV file from SkyDrive or wherever and imports it into a pair of tracks in GarageBand. He then records his bass to a third track in GarageBand. When he's satisfied with his recording, he exports just that third track containing the bass to a WAV file and uploads it to SkyDrive.

You download your friend's bass track from SkyDrive. You check your V-Tracks to make sure they're still set to Tr1v1, Tr2v1, and Tr3v1 (or whichever v-tracks you used for your final, pre-mix takes). Then you import the WAV file containing the bass to Tr4v1. So now you should have on your BR-800:

  Track 1v1: Guitar
  Track 2v1: Lead vocal
  Track 3v1: Harmony vocal
  Track 4v1: Bass
Track 7v8: First mix, left channel
Track 8v8: First mix, right channel

You don't want the first mix at the moment, so either set the v-tracks for tracks 7 and 8 back to 1 or simply lower the faders on those two tracks. When you press Play, you'll hear a mix of the first four tracks (guitar, lead vocal, harmony vocal, and bass). When you're satisfied with the levels, etc., bounce or master to another empty pair of v-tracks (Tr78v7, for example).

Hi 64G yes you are correct i want just the one track back from him and then import that back into the song which is how you have described the process , not done a great deal of collaboration with other muso,s so still on a learning curve, but it all seems to make sense know , not sure about the Skydrive but i will check it out and see what it has to offer me in the process , i am aware of the wave files being larger than a mp3 which is why the Skydrive could be a valid alternative , i thought that there may be a issue with garageband not knowing the software, but if i can use wave files then i am half way there already ..

Once again cant thank you enough for youre, time and seemingly endless knowledge of recording multitrackers and music software , i tip my hat to you 64G..
