Bl**dy brilliant, just bl**dy brilliant. And so beautifully recorded for just guitar and vox. How did you do it? Inquiring minds want to know.....

Cheers,

What it is, I still haven't learnt how to use the rhythm/pattern arrangement properly on my BR1600CD  ::)  :D

So I'm kinda scared of embarking on anything that requires drums at the moment. I will get round to learning it, but right at the moment I'm finding it so easy to record mic'd stuff... so I'm concentrating on creating recordings that don't even need a click track.

When I settled down to do this one, I realised I could actually do a reasonable performance on stage with just me and a guitar... so why not try and do it live in one go.

So, I set up a mic between me gob and me geetar... and went for it.

Ideally, I'd use two mics to give me better post-processing options. But I only own two servicable mics - a Rodes Condensor that requires phantom power, and my old battered and rusty SM58. Unfortunately the BR1600 doesn't like running a mixture of mics that require phantom power or not, and I actually wanted a condensor on both the vocal and guitar anyway.

So I ended up with a mono track with both the guitar and vocal.

I got a reasonable balance through mic placement over a couple of tests to see what the EQing problems might be. I got something that might be servicable, and recorded three complete takes.

The third was the best but had an issue in the guitar playing in the third verse.

I went for a fourth take, but we were going backwards by then.

I re-inspected the problem in the third take and found that it was perfectly in time, and no "wrong notes" were actually played. I was just leaving big gaps when my mind went blank, with a tiny "fluff" as it first happened... so it seemed possible I could cover it on another track.

Luckily I hadn't moved from my seat, put the guitar down, or moved the mic... so I opened up a new track, set up an auto-punch right on the "hole", and then played along with the whole verse. When I played it back, balancing the volume of the new track, I could hardly hear the join, so I decided that was the take to use.

I just put a bit of reverb on it, used the "Pop" mastering algorithm un-edited, and normalised the resulting stereo track...

It sounds so simple. And yet at no point did you have to press the "Extra Talent" button....

Thanks for the explanation - I wondered if you were doing anything special with the mike set up.

Cheers,

Nigel

Thought I had I commented on this a while back. Apologies.

Crazy good vocals. I'm not sure I can comment further.

Thanks folks :)

The missus is on at me to do some more in a similar vein. Apparently this one captures the day-to-day "andrew and his geetar" vocal better than the "production recordings" I get so excited about.

I've got some Jerome Kern up my sleeve that i'm rehearsing even as I type (well, not at precisely the same time, but the geetar is on my lap and the lyrics is beside the computer...).

I'm thinking your wife has the right idea - mighty fine, mighty fine :)
