Forgive me for a little theatre inspired by my favourite cretan author - Nikos Kazantzakis and his book which I'm currently rereading  - called "Freedom and Death" ostensibly about his fathers part in the cretan struggle against the tyranny of the pasha's rule.

Thanks for bearing with me.

Battlecry – Freedom and Death

Our arms are the mountains and the crags
Our ammunition in our hearts
Not the ancient swords and muskets we tote
Against all odds

The light of the day we shun – not for fear
But our might swells when the dusk draws near
This battle we will never win
But how can we lose when the enemy tremble at our cry

Our battlecry
Freedom
Freedom and death
Freedom and death
Freedom and death

When we climb from the hill – to the sea
The lights in the harbour – glint on the water
But the enemy never knows where we will be
Where we will die today

Freedom
Our battle cry is freedom and death
Freedom and death
Freedom and death

You are a true artist, my friend.

I always find your work very interesting.

When this song started... I thought... the vocals need to be moved forward in the mix...then I felt myself lean forward, ever so slightly... then I thought... what a small price to pay, to experience such a lovely piece of work.

Forgive me... Sir.

This works so well, and it takes some large amount of imagination and talent to come up with something like this.

There are some great musical melodies going on in there, and your spoken word vocals just seem to fit perfectly.

Very different, and VERY good!

I'm not familiar with the story, but the song is powerful. Very well done. Thanks for sharing.

Many thanks all for the kind words and listens.

I have posted a new version, which I hope is better.  The problem with trying to improve things is that in the process it is easy to lose what was there in the first place.  Hope I've got the balance right?!?

The story is of a Captain Michales, a fiercely pround man, who became so burdened by the oppression of the Pasha's on Crete he joined in an insurrection 1889 knowing he would not survive, yet believing that to fight was right and that the "Great Powers" would see their plight and come to their aid.  The "Battle Cry" was  "Freedom, or Death".  But as they knew they were going to die - I changed it to "Freedom and Death" the same as the book title.

Thanks again for your kindness.

Powerful and poetic - perfectly captures the feeling of an epic and heroic struggle.
